there is a short video of Smart's defense game 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kaVgasFSzg
I didn't realize his defense is that good before watching the video
I actually think His defense is already better than AB's
(less foul, more team and off ball defense
while AB's defense is mainly pressing and Harassment the ball handler only)

Thanks for the video. Two things really stood out for me.

First, smart is amazing at how he plays the screens. He often just plows through them since he is so strong.

Next, his lateral speed is incredible. He was able to keep with his man as they race around the court and still beat him to the spot. His long arms help too.

Very aggressive on defense, attacking a number of handoffs by the other team.

Color me impressed.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

And he plays intense defense without fouling much. When he does get a foul call, he will bicker a bit and then play even stronger defense, moving even quicker laterally, beating his man to the spot. Love it

I love the way he keeps his man in front of him without handchecking.  Leaves him two hands to knock the ball away.  He just takes the hit in the numbers and goes for the ball.  Love his man defense and his team defense is great also.  Very aware of the ball and players and where the passing lanes are and gets in them in a very timely manner.  And thats just his defense, the rest looks good also.  Nice pick Danny.

you can really see how Smart uses his strength on these plays to push his man away from the basket on drives. He gets on his hip and knocks him off balance. It's a real physical style and he will certainly get called for a foul sometimes, but clearly very effective. He also gets through screens really well and off the ball, his positioning is really perfect. Frequently denies passes to force bad shots.
