Ray Rice, by the way, knocked out his girlfriend in a casino at 2 in the morning and was caught on video dragging her unconscious body into and out of an elevator.
While I understand that the NFL stands to make a lot more money by having Ray Rice on the field for the Ravens than they do someone like Justin Blackmon catching balls for the Jags, the idea that a two game suspension is in anyway sufficient is insane, and proof that the NFL simply is too big to care about its fanbase. We've all known that for years, though.
That was my first inclination, too, but there's unfortunately not a lot of precedent for long suspensions in any of the major sports related to domestic violence.
Rice got suspended for 1/8th of the season, plus will miss another game check. That's the equivalent of suspending an NBA player 10 games, plus fining him the equivalent of five more games. There hasn't been close to that type of suspension before. Similarly, in baseball, I don't think there's ever been a Commissioner sanction toward a player, and the longest suspension I could find was 7 games.
I agree that more severely suspending players for recreational drug use than for for punching their wives into unconsciousness is a joke, but unfortunately, it's not just the NFL that has a blind eye toward this stuff.
