If there is one guy in the NBA I'd love to see a moratorium on trade ideas for, it would be Josh Smith.  He'd be good money tied up into a guy who does not consistently help a team win.  His hurts:helps ratio on offense is unfortunately skewed in the wrong directon.

Perhaps someday when he's making MLE money and focuses his game on defense, rebounding, and garbage offense he'll be a contibutor to a winner.  Jeff Green is a much better 3rd/4th option at $9M  than Smith at $14M (my opinion, of course).  I just don't understand the interest in him.

He didn't make the playoffs last year but before that he made the playoffs six years in a row while being one of the best two players on his team.

The fascination is with his athleticism when he is playing the four. He creates turnovers, rebounds and creates scoring opportunities by flying down the court. He is also an underrated passer.

I would trade for him if the pistons would take on Wallace and a pick.

I seriously doubt the Hawks would give up Horford in a sign and trade for Monroe.  I think they want to set up a 3 man big rotation of Monroe, Horford, Millsap.  Atlanta does have cap room so they can take back more salary than they send out.  Something like Carroll, Payne, Schroeder, and a couple future 1st's works financially but I'm not sure taht would be enough for Detroit, but it wouldn't be terrible value for a guy that doesn't want to be there and who will likely just sign for a year and leave as an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Yeah, I suppose they could do that, which actually wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe they do something like Millsap at the 3, Horford at the 4 and Monroe at the 5 which would actually be a pretty good team.

Unless the Hawks would like to deal us Paul Millsap for Jeff Green. Then they get a little more athleticism with Green at the 3 and the Celts get another veteran player in Millsap which could help us over the top as a playoff team.

I did also notice the Hawks have 8 million in cap space so maybe they just sign Monroe outright (maybe like a 4 yr/32 million contract.)

As for Sullinger and Bass, I'd rather have someone else as our starting PF

Monroe is restricted.  They can't sign him outright.  Detroit will just match and then Monroe is stuck in Detroit on a very small contract.

Josh Smith was generally not one of the two most productive players on the Hawks when they made the playoffs.  Well, unless you use PER to rank players, but that would be stupid.

For the Pistons to take on Wallace for Smith, you'd probably have to give them a young PF and multiple unprotected firsts.

OR, maybe Atlanta deals Kyle Korver and a trade exception to Detroit for Monroe in a S/T….

Smith was absolutely one of the two most productive players on the Hawks.  He was also without question their best defender.  It isn't close on that end of the floor.  Take 09/10 season, which was the 2nd of 3 straight 2nd round teams.  Smith was the Hawks leader in blocks and steals, 3rd leading scorer, 2nd leading rebounder, 2nd leading assist man, and 2nd in FG% on the team.  2nd in Win Shares, but significant leader in Defensive win shares.  leader in PER.  I'd probably call him their most productive player that year.  It was fairly similar the year before and the year after that (you know when the Hawks were 2nd round playoff teams).

His problem in Detroit is he is playing the 3 and he is not a good enough outside shooter to be playing the 3 on offense.  He was at his best when he was the 4 along side Horford and M. Williams.  You put Smith in that type of situation he would be pretty darn good again.  Boston is not that situation though as it has two young PF's in Sullinger and Olynyk.

Now if Boston could acquire Monroe and Smith, I would be ok with that.

Green, Sullinger, Wallace, Bass, 2015 LA pick, 2016 Bos 1st (lottery protected)

for

Monroe, Smith

I think that would be a pretty solid trade for both teams.

Boston's 15 man team would then be

Rondo/Smart/Pressey
Bradley/Smart/Young/Babb or Bogans
Turner/Thornton/Young/Johnson
Smith/Olynyk
Monroe/Zeller/Faverani/Anthony

I like that team.  I think it could be pretty solid this year (45-50 wins) and still is young enough with enough assets to add to the team in the future.  A real step in the right direction.

Apparently Monroe doesn't like playing with smith. Add another knucklehead (turner) to that mix and
Things could get ugly quick.

I don't want Smith here if he has to play the 3. So that means moving Sully to slide Smith over to the PF and Turner the starting SF.

But I still don't think Rondo is Steven's guy. I think Smart with his D, good BBIQ and better potential to score will be the Starting PG by next season at the latest. So Smith to hear will not be the best move.

I don't want Smith here at all.
