Its all about the return package. I'm okay with C's keeping Rondo. A lot of people are in a rush to trade him but the more I think about it the more I feel moving him via S&T after the season is the best for the team. Below is my reasons/strategy why, it's a perfect storm IMO.
First reason is player development. Smart sits behind and learns from Rondo with no pressure. Then takes over team in 2015. By 2016 with a full year at the helm there is an understanding of what Smart will be.
In a S&T to a team with cap it nets the team a pick or two and big trade exemption. Thing with the exemption is you use it in 2015 if a good deal comes or in 2016 off-season the real target.
2016 is another good FA class that can be set up well for in 2015 is handled right. With the TE intact, TV cap raise, no new contracts, Green and Wallace cap space you're ready to add two max contracts. Only two/three Rookies (2015), AB, Smart, Young, Pressey and Olynyk are scheduled to be on the books for a cap total of around 25 million. Oh and the first Brooklyn pick is in!
Now by using the TE in 2016 after you sign first two max players you can add a third max contract while retaining bird rights to players and having the roster guys I mentioned above.
Some 2016 note worthy FAs: Durant, Beal, A.Davis, Drummond, Hibbert, Jones, Lamb, MKG, B.Lopez, Ross, Waiters, Jonas V.
Possible 2015 RFA carry overs: Burks, T.Thompson, K.Thompson, K.Walker, D.Williams, Biyombo, J.Butler, T.Harris, Kanter, Jackson, Kawhi, Morris twins, Rice, Vucevic.
"If" C's hit big in a Heat style coup they can have a team of Smart, Beal, Durant, Olynyk, Davis. So let's not rush to trade Rondo just yet. I say get a King's ransom or wait it out.
