I think if we trade Rondo... which I'm bumping up to 49.5% chance of happening due to the Thomas rumors... There's going to be a lot of Celtic fans startled by the ho-hum package we receive in return. Thomas + McLemore seems more in line with what we can expect to get back.
agreed. folks should have tempered expectations. no drummonds or cousins' are coming back for rondo. I think the Cs would be lucky to get two good assets for him. I've got my fingers crossed they can use rondo to get some salary relief in order to accelerate the rebuild.
I'm guessing there's close to a 50% chance of these three teams trading. But Sacremento is not trading Cousins and Detroit will only trade one of Monroe and Smith... Probably Smith. It will look like the near trades we have already seen discussed. Rondo to Sac, Thomas and McLemore or Stauskas to the Celts, Smith to Sac, and Thompson and D Williams to Detroit. And I think Detroit will get extra pieces like a pick from each of the Celts and Kings. Or instead of a Cs pick, Bradley in a sign and trade.
Detroit retains the front court of Monroe and Drummond. It hasn't worked in the past, but Van Gundy would like the opportunity of making it work. Bradley would play well off Jennings.
Many Celtics fans will be disappointed by the return for Rondo, but there aren't a lot of suitors for a guy that played poorly returning from an ACL. The Celtics will have their backcourt of the future. They won't win a lot of games, but they will be young and be able to get their center in next year's draft.
In a year's time we could be looking at:
Smart, Thomas
Stauskas, Thomas (who would guard PGs while on the floor with Smart)
Green, Young
Sully, Olynyk
Okafor/Towns/Turner, Jordan Hill (or whatever mediocre center we sign this offseason). That's a lot of potential and we will still have a lot of cap space in the summer of 2016 and the Brooklyn picks.
The Kings are the real winners as Rondo, McLemore/Stauskas, Gay, Smith, and Cousins will be an exciting team.
