He only did 9 reps on the bench at the combine.
Repo

Yeah, nine reps at 185 is downright weak for a man his size.  There is good weight and bad weight.   Muscle weighs more than fat, though.

He has tremendous natural/functional physical strength due to his broad shoulders, wide hips and large behind.  He could improve so much though if he took his training seriously.  Only 9 reps at 185 for a guy like him shows he has never put much time into the gym.

And that's the concern with him - will years of natural basketball talent and having the game come easy to him allow him to put in necessary work to improve?

It has too, right?  He should have the best nutritionist and personal trainers and he seems to have his head on straight.  I certainly hope so.  I think he has the potential to be a near, and maybe occasionally, all star calibre power forward.  But only if he puts the work in.

muscle does not weight more than fat...a lb of muscle = a lb of fat

however, muscle is denser, and I agree with what is said...I do feel it's a concern that he is still dangling around 280 lb for the past 2 years...I wish he is about 250-260

as far as quickness goes, it'll also help prolong his career

People need to get a grip. It's only the end of June. He probably took most of May off, just doing light work outs, and healing his body.

He's just got back into Boston to work on his body. He's always going to be on the heavy side, because he's a bit wide in the back end. Everyone's body type is different, and it may take a couple years before they really find what works for him. But thats his job now.

Now if he's the same way by training camp, then people can jump on him and his work outs, and weight. But give the kid 3 months of working out 5 to 6 days a week and I bet there is a difference in either his body or game.

He said he's in the 280s and trying to get down to 260 by training camp.
I had the sound off. This is horrible.

I really thought he was ~260 and trying to get down to 240 or so. He has no business playing at anything above 250 lbs.

I want to know why Emily was lifting as much as Sully, in dumbbells, through so much of that workout. And if anything, it looks to me as if he's gained weight since the end of the season. That was a serious truck tire around his middle in some of the video shots. He says he's worried about getting in condition more than losing weight, but it sounds like the C's have given him a target of losing 30 pounds.

  • It's what I do! It's who I am!
This is for a online video workout with a reporter, now hard do you think it's gonna be? lol

I agree with giving him until training camp.

When a fat man tells you he's in the "280s range", that means 289.9 on a good day.

That also means Sully's up 20 pounds since the combine.

It brings back memories of that dinner Rondo hosted in the pre-season last year--with reports coming back that Sully had eaten rather more than his share.

While I know some players can play at a heavier weight, Zack Randolph for an example, I'm more concerned about his back.
Everyone knows carrying extra weight is hard on the back. He really needs to dump some weight and strengthen his core if he wants to last.

What a wimpy workout.  I remember some footage of Big Baby working out that the NBA Channel aired several years ago, and Baby's workout was 20x more intense than Sullinger's.

Still, disappointed that he's not committed enough to stay in shape.
