Recent reports have Utah in discussions with Cleveland to swap the 5th pick and Favors for the 1st pick, which they likely would use to take Jabari Parker.

Cleveland loved Embiid and reportedly were set to take him until the broken foot.  They have the best access to his medical records of all the teams, an advantage to them.  My educated guess is that they would take Embiid with the 5th pick.

If Boston strongly desires Embiid (reports have them willing to trade up to take him), and fears that Cleveland would take him at 5, Boston would have to make a trade with Orlando to swap 6 and 4.

Where would that leave Philly and Milwaukee?  Philly loves Wiggins.  Does Milwaukee? My sense is that not as much as Philly.  So I could see them agreeing to swap 2 and 3 so that Philly can get Wiggins.  Philly has so many draft picks, a lot of flexibility here to get something done.  Milwaukee was just reported to put a lot of their assets on the market, including their PG, Jennings.  A sign, perhaps, that they want to take Exum?  Makes sense.

None of this may happen, but it just shows you some of the dynamics at play. Reminds me of something I concluded after the 2006 draft, when Thomas and Aldridge were swapped, Roy and Foye, etc.:  Each team pretty much knows who the other team is targeting.  They talk to each other all the time.   I think it is no different this year.

Are these speculations off base? For example, why would Cleveland consider trading down to 5, other than to take Embiid at 5?  The only other players they have worked out (Parker and Wiggins) will be gone by 5.

Of course, Cleveland would have to assume that Embiid would likely be available at 5.   Or maybe they are willing to take Vonleh at 5 if Embiid is gone.  In any event,  I feel if Danny has decided to target Embiid, he'd better be prepared to trade up to get him.

Trades rarely happen between top teams.  There's too much too lose from trading down and missing your player.  At the same time, if you know the team ahead of you wants someone else, there's no need to swap with them, since if they trade down their player won't be there.

That's what I thought before the 2006 draft.  Look at all the moves made by the top teams amongst themselves that year.  Chicago, Portland (twice) Minnesota, Boston, they were among the top 6 teams in the draft, and all made moves with each other that night, extracting value in the process.  The reports I am reading make me feel we are going to see similar fireworks Thursday.

Sixers expressing strong interest in Embiid at 3, article below suggests so that Milwaukee does not demand too big a price for swapping pick for Wiggins.  Maybe I'm on to something here.

Assuming we stay at 6, I'm fascinated to know who Ainge really wants at the top of this draft.  I would love for it to be Gordon, but I also think Ainge is too smart to let it leak that Gordon was the guy we have been "locked in" on for a while now, so I don't know what to think.  If Gordon is the target though, I am not a fan of sitting on our hands at 6 and hoping he falls in our lap.  I'm not sure a trade up is a viable option - pointless to trade with Utah if they want him (and they just had him in for a second workout that they were secretive about), and for what we would have to give up to Orlando at 4 would not be worth it.

I think Embiid will be available at 6, but I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.  No one needs medical records to know he is a potential disaster waiting to happen, "No need for Embiid".  I'm not enamored with Smart/Vonleh, Randle I like but not nearly as much as Gordon.  Ainge's best option on draft night may end up being to trade down to get a player of similar value as would have been available at 6, this idea depresses the hell out of me but could very well play out on Thursday.

2006 was not a draft people were too excited about, though.  Lots of teams trying to squeeze some value out of what they had; in our case, we traded to improve our cap mess.  That's how good the draft was.

If Boston has an opportunity to jump into the Top 4, I'm sure they'd take it.   Whether they end up with Wiggins, Parker, Embiid or Exum, I think they'd be pretty darn happy.

I don't think that happens, though.

It's likely with Orlando, the top three not so much.
