Tanking is been an issue for losing teams. They are alleged for losing in purpose. In order to prevent teams on doing that, here is my idea:

Give the highest odds to the lottery team with best record. Meaning, the team in the middle of the pack in the standings gets the highest chance on landing the #1 overall pick.

Why do it?

Because it will encourage management of teams to build better rosters. If they plan to tank, they need to be at least decent enough to have better odds. It will also force them to go in the playoffs if they are better than they hope to be. Even if they are the worst team this season, they can sign free agents or pull a trade just to be good enough to reach the middle of the standings for next season.

Teams will tank out of the 7th and 8th seed in certain drafts.

I think the nba should just go back to a less weighted system. 1 ping pong ball for the 14th worst team. 14 balls for the worst team, and so on.

problem is not all who are at the bottom of the standings tank.  looking at the bottom 10 teams today, here is my assessment:

1. Mil - horrible team
2. Orl - in the middle of a youth movement
3. Phi - tanking
4. Uta - in the middle of a youth movement
5. Sac - trying to win
6. Cle - trying to win
7. Bos - tanking
8. LAL - tanking
9. NYK - trying to win
10. Det - trying to win

That would cause just as many problems. The 6th 7th and 8th seeds would just tank games at the end of the season to get the #1 pick

But competition for it will be much harder and bigger risk than bottoming out. If you make the playoff accidentally, you will land in the 15th spot by default. 14th spot will get better odds but they will also risk lotto chance by making the playoffs.

It could also benefit teams that are trying to win IMHO. If they failed to make the playoffs in a season, they will at least get rewarded for their effort handsomely.

Like I said, it will force teams to be better on managing their teams. They are required to be decent enough to have a high chance in the lottery.

I don't think tanking is ever something you can truly get rid of due to the nature of the nba where one player can the direction of an entire franchise much easier than in other sports. So I don't believe there will ever be a true solution to tanking, just a necessary evil that teams will continue ( as they should) try to exploit.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

On Felger and Mazz they talked about Having the bottom teams right before the actual playoffs, have there own 3 day tourney. Winner gets the #1. That way teams at the bottom stay a little more balanced so they still have a chance at a top pick.

Not sure how it would work in the long run, if the really bad teams ever get out to the cellar. But it would be really fun to watch.

I would love to see the draft eliminated altogether.

Build a legitimate 30 team D-League where each NBA team has its own farm team, and let them sign kids as free agents as soon as they turn eighteen.

No draft.  No rewards for losing.  But, plenty of rewards for finding and developing talent.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

If this is an alternative option to collage ball, it would be a disaster. every highly rated kid would sign for the LA/NY affiliates. The draft is a good system, but the lottery is not(although its better then a draft where you finish system).

I think the draft wheel that was reported earlier this year is the fairest option - the one where you draft in each slot 1-30 over a 30 year period.

Brutal idea. How many players would be going to the like of Utah and Minnesota?
