Quote
Ainge told Toucher and Rich he very much expects for Pierce and Garnett’s number will be retired in the coming years. However, when being asked about the third member of the Big Three in Ray Allen,

“I’m not sure yet.” Ainge said about Allen’s number. “I don’t know the answer to that. It will be something the ownership of the team will decide. Who knows what happens when those guys careers are over and time settles in.”

Ainge also addressed whether Allen’s departure for Miami will have an effect on the Celtics decision to retire or not retire his number:

“I think that’s obviously somewhat of a factor. But I think time heals those hurts, and logic will take over,” said Ainge.

Thought I might post this since it has been a topic of discussion among fans after Ray Allen took his talents to Miami.

It should be what it stands.

34 and 5 to be retired.

20 will be open to the next Celtic player to come in. Kevin Love doesn't look too bad on it...neither does Jabari Parker  ;)

I certainly hope that BOS has a contingency plan in place to retire Ray's jersey.

As it stands now, though, I'm guessing that Pat Riley and MIA will do it, sending one of the greatest shooters in NBA history off into the sunset - the right way.

IMO, it's the right thing to do. KG, Paul AND Ray brought us Banner 17. They made "Big Three" cool again. Those three did what NO OTHER team, not even MIA, could do - going from one of the worse in the NBA to NBA Champions. That 17th Banner is keeping us perhaps eternally in front of the Lakers.

And that is a good thing.

This is not a case of fans not getting it...not in the usual way.

Paul,K.G.,Rondo Danny and Wyc and to a lesser extent Doc but he said himself it hurt yada yada (i don't trust anything Doc says) anyway people closer to the situation and with more knowledge than we will ever have seem to have lost their shine to Ray.  Wyc makes part of that final call and he was way more p---ed about Doc than Ray and he threw Doc under the bus doc built a couple times in strong unquestionable terms.

Ray left within his contract framework. Doc didn't.

I think Rays case of the "loose lips" about the Organization and coaching hurt him more with the brass. While you're working with Riley and talking about Danny and Co. It's not good for you. Aside from that though their is clearly no real love loss at the players level either.

I think They let Miami decorate their own sparse rafters with Ray and the Celtics call that a day.

The worse part is ray allen still doesnt know what he did wrong and why everyone is mad at him.

At least johnny damon very well knew what he was doing.

You bring up some good points.

Include me in the group that wished that Ray would've just been silent about the whole thing and enjoy his time in MIA. But I guess Ray thought that what he said about the situation warranted being said.

I guess you could blame the "MIA Media", too - he was asked seemingly pointed questions by the MIA Sports media about him leaving BOS.

And he answered, in true Ray fashion. He spoke his mind - whether I/We liked it or not.

I just hope that the "Celtics Legacy" as an organization - forgives Ray Allen. This "He Said, He Said", IMO - would make BOS look small in regards to this thing down the road. Yes - Ray Allen "started" it by talking about it. But in the end I know that BOS is bigger than any one player.

For me, I don't want to have to revisit this with my grand children 10-15 yrs from now about why/how/when Ray Allen left BOS for MIA....I'd rather talk with them about Ray Allen's jersey being in the rafters next to Paul and KG's. I'd rather revisit that glorious butt-whipping we gave our "True" hated rivals - The Los Angeles Lakers - on Jun 17, 2008 - right after I got back from a long deployment.

Let MIA Media continue to stir the pot and let BOS be bigger than that.

i don't think Ray Allen's jersey should be retired. Hall of Fame career, undoubtedly, and i'm glad he helped us win that ring, but KG changed the modern-day Celtics culture into what it is today and Pierce is, well, Pierce. i think the gap between their contributions and ray allen's contributions are quite large.
