Ainge is stockpiling picks --- not to rebuild through the draft -- but to swoop in and grab a mega-star on an expiring contract. Those picks will be worth more than players.

And Ainge needs Rondo for the same reason he needed Pierce to get the Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett dominos to fall. There has to be at least some all-star talent here to get the first one to fall.

I'm thinking Kevin Durant, 2015.

I made a thread very similar to this a while back.

I definitely think if we don't get a top 3 pick ainge could try to do what he did in '07.

OR

we get a top 3 pick - 2015, trade ALL our picks for KD :D

jokes aside, even if we get our own top 3 pick, we still have like what 8 or 9 first rounders? Add in a couple of players to sweeten the deal. The bigger question is, will KD bail on OKC. The way I look at it, with Westbrook, OKC is a contender for years to come. Why would he leave that?

Unless Westbrook is completely broken down (see Rose), and OKC thinks they need to rebuild?? I just don't see it happening

The premise is a good one, but Durant won't be available any time in the near future.

Kevin Love and Anthony Davis also come to mind as possibilities for 2015.

Love, maybe. Davis won't be traded.

yeah the parallels are there but i'm still afraid.

this is horrible, but in my head I keep hearing "Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen aren't walking through that door folks!!"

Obviously any celtic fan would love to see the slim reaper in green, but I really don't think he'll leave OKC.

I think this is the current plan, but maybe for Love or Anthony Davis. But, as stated above Davis is probably not going anywhere.

KD. No. Love is going to the Lakers. Davis is staying put. Before they started playing well i thought Lamarcus was a possibility, but since they're playing so well i doubt he goes anywhere.

Guys there is no one to team up with minus Melo and he's only one guy. There really are not very many great players on bad teams anymore. I think Rondo is gone guys...I hate to say it but I do. Personally I think Ainge does a trade like this:

Rondo for Marcus Thorton + Ben McLemore + King's 2014 Lotto Pick + Isaiah Thomas

Kings are trying to be a playoff would absolutely do this trade. For us we'd get another lottery pick in this upcoming draft and would probably be lottery bound for the next few years before finally being a team on the rise in 2016-2017. Yes it's a long ways away, and yes I know the draft is never gaurenteed, but Danny Ainge has picked talent all the way in the late teens and 20s, I'm sure if he gets a few top 5 picks he will hit some true home runs.

Sacramento has already traded its 2014 draft pick.  It's got lottery protection, but the pick is tied up until 2017.

I think the Kings can pick a player for us on draft night though right?
so above trade is okay if we name and they pick the guy. Except I think Isaiah Thomas is expiring or RFA so him being included is half pointless.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

By 2015 Rondo could be too expensive to pay for the offensive talent he needs around him.

Usually players the caliber of Davis and Durant become available when they are around 30 such as when KG and Ray were.   So in 2021 after years of trading for future assets while holding onto Rondo now a 35 years old role player, and holding onto young superstar SG player X Ainge now trades 10 combined draft picks for a 32 year old Durant and 27 year old Davis.  :P

Don't think this would work.  We give them rondo now and they give us the pick later?  Plus, they would be trading for rondo to make the playoffs, which means that they would not have a pick at all.  Plus, if they did make it to the lotto, and traded the pick, they then can't give up another next year.
