The Lakers and Cavs Bynum/Gasol talks have stalled:

Quote
The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers have stalled their trade discussions centered on Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum, according to sources.

The talks are not entirely dead, but are described as no longer progressing.

The Cavaliers have until Jan. 7 to trade Bynum before his contract becomes fully guaranteed.

The major issue is the Lakers' insistence on acquiring an additional asset from the Cavaliers beyond Bynum.

Maybe we can be facilitators of this deal as a third team and get some assets. Anyone have any ideas on how we can get in on this?

One issue in particular for the Lakers is taking back extra salary beyond this year. It is rumored that that is why Jarrett Jack as the player that Cleveland was going to pair with Bynum to make the numbers work was rejected by the Lakers. That's where we come in.

I have one trade proposal that I'm intrigued by but wanted feedback as to its viability:

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=pj75ly6

Bos out: Jeff Green and Keith Bogans
Bos in: Dion Waiters, Jarrett Jack and some combination of Cleveland's 2014 first rounder and their 3 2014 second rounders.

Cle out: Waiters, Jack, draft pick (s)
Cle in : Gasol, Jeff Green

LA out: Gasol
LA in:  Bynum and Bogans (expiring)

Why for Cleveland: Instant relevance and playoff contention

Why for Lakers: saves TONS of $$$ now and later and can be even more of a player in free agency

Why for the Cs: Great potential in Waiters, solid backup to Rondo for next 3 1/2 years in Jack (but we swallow the tied up $$ in Jack for the draft pick(s)) AND this puts us even more under the luxury tax.

If the numbers work out , I'd do this but only to flip waiters. I don't want waiters.

The Lakers save money anyway when Gasol expires.  They are said to want some asset back for Gasol which makes sense if for nothing else than to make it not appear as though they are tanking.

The purpose of acquiring Bynum, though, then releasing him and then immediately saving lots of $$$ this season is their primary incentive in doing this.

The Lakers would save more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes by doing the deal.

That's pretty big incentive in and of itself. Anything else they get is gravy. There were also reports of haggling between the Cavs and Lakers as to who should pony up a draft pick too in addition to the players deal itself. That seems to have dissipated and the Lakers want "another asset". Bogan's expiring could be that.

If the incentive of the expiring of Bogans isn't enough, give them Crawford, too, but the Lakers would have to add filler to make the ##s work.

EDIT: Strike that. It works with Crawford going and nothing else coming back from the Lakers.

I just don't get why the C's would do that. Not only Boston would be helping the Lakers, they'd replace a SF with a SG and a PG. jamming even more the gard positions, tying up more long term $$ (ie losing flexibility this summer) and becoming thin at SF is no smart move. Unless there's a subsequent trade that flips AB and JCRAW for a good young SF (MKG or Barnes ...) and even then I feel like it would be a latteral move.

I doubt there's a need to think so big.

Simply send Bogans to LA, and take on a smaller expiring contract from Cleveland, like CJ Miles. This allows Cleveland to take on Gasol's large contract.

Boston gets another modest trade exception, and some additional room under the LT threshold to make other deals before the deadline.

I'd be fine taking on Jack for Bogans.  I think Jack would be a big help for the team until Rondo comes back and then would be the perfect 3rd guard off the bench when Rondo is back.  It would also allow Boston to move Bradley while he has good trade value as he is no longer as necessary.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I guess that all depends on whether you think that 1. Waiters unrealized potential as well as  2.the picks (whatever they might be)and 3. the $$$ savings this year and putting us further under the luxury tax is worth giving up "he is what he is" Jeff Green and taking on Jack's contract.

I think it is. But I can see the other side.

Great points!! TP.

I like Jack a lot too. Even though he's 30, he's more than serviceable as Rondo's backup and 3rd guard.

Kid has stones too. Not only is he mentally tough and a good veteran presence, but he's not afraid to speak his mind. I loved it when he called out Ray Allen, when Allen slinked off to Miami. One of the few NBA players to do it.

I could live with that, but would prefer the larger trade, as we would get younger and picks.

Still, good points.

I don't get it. The Lakers will save $20mm, why are they haggling here?
