Question about the Nets 2014 pick

At what point in the draft process do the Hawks have to decide whether to switch picks with the Nets?

Post-lottery, or beforehand if the Nets aren't in the lotto.  In other words, whenever the pick has been locked into position.

It is unfathomable that the Hawks would choose to have the worse pick, so the only scenario where your question makes sense is whether or not Atlanta has to swap picks before or after the lottery if both teams miss the playoffs.  Who gets which pick will be determined after the lottery in that case.

It's funny, because right now the Nets are tied for the 4th worst record in the league... but Atlanta is doing fairly well and would be picking #18. 

I wouldn't worry about it, though.  We are currently living in Bizarro Land where the Celtics have the 7th seed in the playoffs and the Nets have the worst record in the league.  Give it a bit more time and the Nets should be right towards the top of the standings while Boston will be well on their way to landing a Top 8 pick.

basically, as i read it, atlanta can switch picks with brooklyn in 2014, which they would do if brooklyn's pick was better than their own.

if atlanta switches, then boston will get the atlanta pick instead of the brooklyn pick.

if atlanta does NOT switch, boston gets the brooklyn pick.

so, as long as atlanta stinks, the celtics are probably going to get the brooklyn pick. the fun part will be if BOTH brooklyn and atlanta stink. then the celtics will get a good pick regardless.

Agreed that the Nets pick is likely in the 20's. No way Atlanta swaps for that pick. They will be 8-10 slots higher IMO. at the end of the season and before the playoffs, we will have a pretty clear picture of which pick we have.

I am much more interested in the 2016 Nets pick we will own. That pick could be top 10 and ours the lower one in the 20's. KG and Pierce will be retired, Johnson and  Williams will be that much older. I see little chance that anyone will be giving away top level players to the Nets for expiring and they really will not have much in the way of assets to trade with beyond Lopez.

This pick could be the key to the whole trade IMO.
