Agree with those that say the time isn't right, but we should be excited that this is a "pass" for us.  If players of his caliber are old hat to us then I'm excited to see who we finally pull the trigger on.

perhaps the point being made is that pau is not so much "old hat" as just old. he is 33 now and his performances will not be increasing in the near future...or distant future for that matter.

pau is, was, an outstanding player. but at 33 his window of good years is not going to be open that much longer. also consider that he has only played more than 65 games in 1 of the last 4 seasons. so injuries maybe something to consider as well.

contrast pau's future with the current celtics window of suck, which they just threw open after trading KG and pierce. with or without pau, the celtics are looking at being bad for at least 3 years, and conceivably even 4-5.

that means pau would be 36 years old, or more, by the time the celtics are reemerging as a contender.

for any good pau might provide in the short term, the celtics are probably better off passing on him and instead investing in someone younger who can help the team into the future.

Gasol is a too good a player and one of the few assets the Lakers have. They're going to want a lot for him.

I don't think they'll find a match unless they take on salary longer term though. Just as the C's had to eat some salary to deal KG/Pierce, its incredibly hard to find a match that doesn't have longer term salary ballast.

It will be interesting.  A lot will depend on where the team stands in February.  If they are clearly a lottery team, then I could see them try to get what they can for Gasol.  Their top priority might be to try to move him along with Nash, to get Nash off the books for the summer.

What could be really interesting could be if a team like Washington to make a run at the pair.

Something like this for Washington: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=lawpw93

The Lakers get rid of Nash, and get a couple young players to add to their even higher lottery pick this season without Nash and Gasol messing things up.

Washington gets an All-Star big man to put next to Nene, and a great mentor for Wall, who can also slide in at the SG spot, and cover the opposing PG, because Wall is big enough to cover SGs.

That is the type of move that could make Washington a real team to watch in the playoffs this year.

Trade won't load for me for some reason, but pairing a healthy Gasol with Nene, Beal and Wall would probably make for some really fun basketball.

Cs could try to gain assets by facilitating a Gasol trade.

D Wright would have to be added to this trade after Dec 15 to make $ work

Lakers, get young talent in Leonard and Barton, an expiring deal in Humphires and decent filler in Wright

Blazer, get Pau and Sacre. This helps keep aldridge happy. The price is steep losing two young bigs but Pau, aldrige and Batum makes for an dynamic front court. Sacre fits in nicely as there backup center. Cs could include a future protected first to lessen the loss of young talent.

Celtics, get R Lopez and Freeland. At only 25 Lopez becomes the Cs center and is a good compliment to Kelly and Sully.

I would think they'd rather want to keep him with Dwight gone.

But yeah I don't see much need for him here with tha C's rebuilding. I didn't get tha love jones for him in tha first place but Pau makes more sense for tha C's if Pierce and KG were still here.

Remember that Ainge acquired a 36-year-old Gary Payton (and even threw in his prior year's draft pick in the initial version of the trade) only a year after demolishing the 02/03 team for being too old/static.  Then he traded a first rounder later in that same season to re-acquire Antoine Walker.

The point is, he wasn't shy about blending rebuilding with win-now moves if a buy-low opportunity struck.  Getting Pau would have multiple benefits - fills a huge need, balances the roster and gives us the first spot in line to resign him (he's only 33 - should be plenty left in the tank).

Humphries/Bogans/Crawford for Pau is almost an exact salary match and would keep the Lakers books clean for next year.  We'd be one player short of the roster minimum, but I believe half a year's worth of a vet min signing would fit under the luxury tax threshold (hello Jason Collins!).

It's just a question of picks: whether Danny would be willing to give them (and how many) and whether the Lakers would want them.

Personally, I'd love to watch a Rondo/Bradley/Green/Sully/Pau team with a pretty solid Lee/Wallace/Bass/Olynyk bench.

I don't know about the long-term salaries.  There are a lot of hefty disposable expiring salaries this year:  Okafor/Ariza in Washington, Hump/Bogans here, Hedo in Orlando (or did he get bought out already?), Stuckey/Villanueva in Detroit, potentially Bogut in Golden State and Ben Gordon in Charlotte.

I think most of those teams will be shopping those guys pretty heavily this season either as buyers or facilitators of 3-team deals.

If the Lakers are willing to dump Pau for expirings and picks, I think they'll have takers.

Different circumstances.  There was pressure on Ainge from management to put out a competitive team and sell tickets.  Things had turned pretty bleak.  The return of Antoine Walker was a publicity stunt from a down-in-the-dumps team that desperately needed to do something.

Boston is coming off a nice little run of quality basketball.  The last two years stunk, but there was enough residual aura that most casual fans didn't realize it was nothing more than a glorified victory lap from an overachieving non-contender.   Fact is, most fans look at this as the first year of a rebuild.  The fans are on board.  We can handle a year of completely bottoming out.  Then next year we will suck profusely again, but we'll have a top 8 2014 rookie to get us excited... we'll be sold on the promise of "the future"... and as long as we keep plucking intriguing talent, we'll be able to withstand this upcoming half-decade of losing without much of a fuss.  It's not until 5 years from now that Celtic fans will start to get antsy for winning basketball again... and that's when (if necessary) management will force our GM to pull desperation trades for post-prime early 30s all-stars.  No sense in trading for Pau now... we're collecting assets.  Either the assets turn into mainstays (best case scenario) or we trade them eventually for veteran splash players (like 2007).

Coulda used him last year....no thanks, now.

Yup.....that s pretty much the story .   Pau is pretty useless for this rebuilding club........

We want a young club with young star potential . Pau would get us a few more wis an be a BAD nothin 8 place seed.

all true, but I would be surprised if Pau wasn't being shopped around.
