  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
I've never ever really watched that many games of the old Celtics, until I moved to Staten Island from Queens. I actually never liked the Celtics, but I got some cheap tapes of Larry Birds games from this store owner who was an avid fan. Moved out from Beantown after his daughters boyfriend who was a gang leader threatened his family.

It was until I watched the mystic of Larry Bird, and every player in the 80's/90's. He also had 2 games of Russell's games, but their in too much terrible quality, and the VHS tapes barely work anymore :(.

We used to chat a lot, and he would sell me 10 war heads for 50 cents, and I would suck on it as we would talk about the Celtics. He was a very smart and intelligent man who knew a lot about the organization and team he loved.

He told me about Len Bias. One of the greatest players who never played in the NBA. Said he could've been better than MJ had he been healthy, and not overdosed on cocaine which would later lead to his fateful and timely death.

He gave me one tape where Bias scored 4 in overtime, and it was amazing seeing his cool and calm stature analyze and take over the game.

It's a shame we really did lose out on him. Had he not done cocaine, who knows how the Celtics would've turned out. A lot of reporters/journalists were saying he was Michael Jordan 2.0.

In 2 days it'll be the day he died, one of the most dreadful events that ever occurred in the Celtics organization.

According to Celtics scout Ed Badger, "He's maybe the closest thing to (Chicago guard) Michael Jordan to come out in a long time. I'm not saying he's as good as Michael Jordan, but he's an explosive and exciting kind of player like that."

'Four days after his death, more than 11,000 people packed the Cole Field House, the university recreation and student center where Bias played for the Terrapins, for a memorial service. Those speaking at the service included Red Auerbach, who said he had planned for three years to draft Bias for the Celtics. Auerbach added that the city of Boston had not been so shocked since the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Bias is buried in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland. On June 30, 1986, the Celtics honored Bias with their own memorial service, giving his never used #30 Celtic jersey to his mother, Lonise.'
"I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies and hypotheses
Can't define how I be dropping these mockeries."

Is the glass half-full or half-empty?
It's based on your perspective, quite simply
We're the same and we're not; know what I'm saying? Listen
Son, I ain't better than you, I just think different

I came across this the other day - http://vault.theacc.com/game/306SR215_s01/Maryland/NorthCarolina/70

The site also has two games against Duke from '84, one being the ACC Title Game.  I haven't watched those yet.  In addition to the UNC Maryland game from '84 on youtube where Bias Ehlos Michael Jordan, there's also this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR5RYQSjUl4

I've read up on him and saw Without Bias, and my question is this - who does he remind you of?  To me, Bias seems like a combination of Bernard King (Bird said he reminded him of BK in Drive) and Dominique Wilkins, but with defense.  The game against Georgia Tech features a match up between Bias and John Salley.  It's been alluded to in other things I've read, but Bias struggled against spider (and got shut down by Ed Pinckney a year earlier in the tournament, I believe, so that doesn't bode well.).  Salley didn't bite on his head fakes, and Bias couldn't go by him because of a lack of a handle, which is something Bias alluded to when he was being interviewed by Rick Barry - ugh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRHPSYq5_5w).  Given his drive, exceptional work ethic, and the legends around him, though, I see no reason to doubt that he would've improved in this department as drastically as he had as an all around player over his four years at Maryland.

Anyway, back to the game vs Georgia Tech.  He did hit two huge shots over Salley, with one being the game tying fg (I think he also posted him up on the right block for a beautiful turnaround jumper earlier).

I'll never forget when my uncle told me about him and how he died, and I couldn't believe it.  Then Reggie passes.  When has something like this ever happened?  It was tough to comprehend as a teenager, and it's still difficult now.  I know he's been talked about and discussed before, so I hope I haven't been too repetitive.  Did anyone ever get to see a bunch of his games, etc?  [dang] drugs and other bad decisions/habits.  What a team that would've been.  Sigh.
