Quote
When pressed to say more about how Rondo would fit with the Pistons, Dumars added: “At this point, I really can’t start talking about somebody else’s player. That traderumor is not true.”

Why do GMs bother denying things that are almost widely accepted to be true?

If they openly talk about another teams player by name it is considered tampering and they will get fined.

You would deny something too if admitting it cost you thousands of dollars.

Because people don't know what's really true?

I take anything like Rondo/Pistons talk with a grain of salt. To me it's always the talked about deals that have a problem coming to fruition over the moves you see outta nowhere as in Harden to Houston (drunk at a party when I saw that tweet) or Stevens coaching the Cs.

I'm not talking about actively mentioning another player. He said the trade rumor wasn't true rather than stating the widely believed notion that he was in fact interested.

Reporter: Is the rumor true that you're interested in Rondo?
Dumars: You betcha.
League: Pay up.

You don't talk about players who are not free agents and not on your team.  Period.  Quickest way to get a fine in any of the major sports.

He can decline to discuss Rondo without saying the rumor isn't true.

I think what happens (and what Danny does all the time) is that there might be SOME truth to the rumor.  But, it is rarely completely true.  There is a lot of gray area here, of what is an offer, what is just a discussion, and things like that.

I thought there was a more noncommittal way of answering that question. Never mind then.  :P

Dumars didn't deny that he's had trade discussions around Rondo, he only denied that specific trade rumor was true.

Back six days ago he also said that he wasn't done dealing, but that the next phase probably wouldn't start up again until sometime in August, after free agency had died down.

It's possible that the two teams are playing something of a game of chicken and they each feel they can wait for some time and see what other options emerge.

So long as the Celtics want Drummond, and the Pistons want to give up Knight, there is nothing to discuss. I see nothing incorrect about Dumars denying the rumors, and even if there was, he'd have to say it anyway.

First off, I'm in the pro-Rondo camp and believe we should be adding pieces TO him and not trading him for pieces but Detroit makes the most sense to me on paper out of any possible trading partner for a few reasons:

-They have the assets required (Monroe/Drummond, Knight, cap space)

-Rondo would likely be happy going there and motivated to finally play alongside his best friend

-Joe Dumars is in the last year of his deal as GM and appears to be wanting to win now

This blog must be the only one where Brandon Knight is seen as an asset.  He had an underwhelming freshman year and took no steps at all the next year.  It is possible that he might have a break through year, but there is no reason to believe this.

He is not a scorer.  He is not a point guard.  He is not a lock down defender.  He can't shoot.  I like the kid.   I think he's a nice guy.  What do people see in this kid in terms of basketball talent?

Precisely. "that trade rumor is not true" doesn't = "were not interested in trading fo Rondo".
