If it's GS, I think they've got a VERY solid shot at seeing some finals time.

Especially with Iggy too. That's a scary team.

It doesn't look like Mark Cuban is going be able to convince a top star to go to Dallas without a superior + young enough supporting star to play alongside them. Dirk and scraps + future cap space is not attractive enough.

Second year in a row they have come up empty. I thought Cuban's track record in Dallas and the infrastructure he has built there would've counted for more than it has done. Dallas are in trouble.

What's their next move then?

Bynum? Pekovic?

Looks like they'll have to get ready to move Dirk, unless they retool in a way I don't forsee. Because why would he want to come back to Dallas now?

Dallas' best shot to return to serious contention is going to come in the form of Bynum.

Aside from Dirk, Dallas has no valuable assets to trade except for 1st rounders that wouldn't be fully developed players until Nowitzki is done. Bynum is an X factor. I wouldn't ridicule front offices that wouldn't sign him because of all the baggage he carries and the price to be paid for such a risk, but he's the only player on the market that has the ability to be an elite player. With an insurance clause in the contract, Dallas should sign him.

A healthy Dirk and Bynum would be one of the best inside-outside, 4-5 tandems in the league. Add solid outside shooters or a player that can score effectively in isolation and they become a serious title contender.

I bet Millsap or J.Smith end up in Dallas.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

I don't think Dallas will trade Dirk. It would be like Boston trading Larry Bird.

I think they should forget trying to bring in a top-10 player for now. Aim for a few lower level stars to play alongside Dirk ... Go for multiple contributors and strength in depth instead.

I would try to bring in Millsap and Calderon for now. If they are available on affordable multi-year contracts. Then maybe a few one year deals. Get back into the playoffs. Keep enough cap flexibility to make trades at mid-season and/or free agent upgrades next summer.

Edit: I think Dallas would need to rebuild through the draft, 50 loss type team, to get Dirk to ask for a trade out of there. They have been through too much together.

The strange thing is, that Mark Cuban probably made the right choice, when he gutted the championship team. It should have given the Mavericks a shot at Chris Paul and/or Dwight Howard, but they also lost the vibe of a contending team, and that was probably their undoing.

I guess that Cuban and Dirk are going to have a good long chat about where Dirk wants to end his career, if the Mavericks go into rebuild through the draft mode.
