I have seen a lot of posts and articles on this blog and by pundits saying things to the effect of: "Screw Doc!", "Fire Danny", "Wyc is going to be upset" and so on. Honestly, I think everyone involved is working on this to make sure the Celts are in as good a position as possible: Wyc, Danny, Doc, KG, and Pierce.
I see a lot of people saying Doc is bailing on his, "I want to be here for the rebuild" statement. I think Doc did stick around for that, and unfortunately it did not pan out, so this is what we are left with. In reality, the rebuild began in 2010 when Doc signed the 5 year extension and Pierce opted out and signed for less on an annual basis with his 3 year extension (again, many crucified paul for opting out at the time when all he was doing was trying to help the team...another example of over reactions).
I think Danny, Doc, and Wyc's hope at the time was that having Doc "signed" for 5 years would convince players to want to come to Boston. I think the dream plan was to get CP3 via trade and sign Dwight once KG and others came off the books the next summer. Danny's went after CP3 hard that training camp with Rondo and Green, and he tried, but CP3 was not enamored with coming to Boston and thus new orleans did not push the trade (it would have fallen through anyway since green's heart issue would have ended the trade anyway). Then Danny tried for West. Again, west decided on Indiana. Next Danny tried several trades with Ray, the closest being for Mayo. Again, Mayo did not really want to come. Clearly, Doc's cache as being a coach people want to play for was not as great as all of us thought. Players want to play with players and with the age of KG and pierce, and the pricklyness of Rondo, our trades were falling through because of a lack of folks wanting to come to Boston (ironic because now CP3 wants to play with KG, Paul, and Doc).
Thus we end up in the summer of 2012, one game away from the finals and Danny decides to go all in with the current pieces because he struck out everywhere else and we were not getting any great offers for our vets. The "rebuild" Doc spoke of in his speech when he renewed was over at that point. We were committed to winning and if it did not work, we were in for a whole new rebuild. One that a Doc like coach is overqualified for at 7 mill a season.
Flash forward to this season and the writing was on the wall. Once the season was over, I think all parties have been open with each other. Danny realized the signings from last year did not work, and Doc probably will not be the free agent pull we thought he was. Wyc realized he does not want to pay Doc 7 mill a year for a rebuilding team, KG and P are ok with moving on, if they can go together and even better if it is with Doc.
The only thing that throws a wrench in this is Woj's tweet about Doc asking for Bledsoe to stay in LA, but I think that is one tweet where Woj is wrong on.
So here we are today. I don't think celts fans need to look at all this and be upset at anyone. I think our whole group is working together to try and make the best situation work out for all parties involved. I'd be shocked if this turns ugly at all.
