Dirk Nowitzki said he would be OK with taking a paycut next offseason if it helped the Mavs lure big-time free agents to Dallas this year.

Nowitzki also said he planned to be a part of the team's pitches to potential free agents, particularly Chris Paul and Dwight Howard. It's not exactly a surprising statement from an aging veteran who saw this year that he needs elite-level help to win another title. The Mavs have plenty of cap space already, but an extra bit from Dirk next summer could help the team round out roster in the long term and sell Paul or Howard on a four- or five-year plan.

Ok hes not a free agent intill 14-15 season,  how can he take a paycut for next season? I thought theres rules you cant, so Why cant  pierce do that?

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
He can't he's talking about in 14-15. The Mavs have the cash to sign a couple of max guys even without him taking a cut this season. I'm assuming he'll take the pay cut next year to keep them out of the luxury if they were to get two big names.

He said:

I got one year left on this deal and then I’m coming off the books. So if that helps for us to be better I’m going to take a paycut.

So, I think he is saying that he is willing to give up money for his next contract after next season.  What I think that means is that he is willing to take a paycut on his next contract so that the Mavs will have the full MLE at their disposal in the future.

If Paul Pierce offered to take a paycut on his next contract and perhaps play for around $5m/year in a sixth man role off the bench, is that helpful?

Someone tell these guys to come to the East and create a super team here (preferably with the Celtics while somehow keeping KG and Pierce) so it can give the Heat a challenge.

I wouldn't give him too much credit.  I am not sure its a given that anyone would be offering him the $20+ million he is currently making after 2014.  So, he might not have a choice but to take a paycut.  Kind of like Pierce did a couple years ago.

Of course he would. He's a great guy.

And nobody likes to play on a .500 team.
