If they were willing to spend I think the best move would have been to keep him of course.

But getting Ed Davis is pretty good for the future and getting Prince fills a gap. Considering their limitations, maybe.

Edit: of course there may be repercussions. What if Gasol doesn't go back because he thinks they're cheap?

Nope and I am happy to see them punished for dumping one of their best players solely for financial reasons. I hope the Clippers make short work of them the rest of the way.

He's talented but the Grizzlies have seemed like a better team without Gay.

Yes. Gay's horrible, no good contract (which of course was their own mistake) would have tied the hands of the franchise going forward. It is that bad. But that isn't the be all end all...

More importantly, the Grizz have actually been better without Gay:

http://offthedribble.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/19/keeping-score-how-a-top-scorers-departure-can-improve-the-offense/

increasing their points per 100 possessions and being a more efficient team.

One can't simply compare Gay to Prince, but have to look at who already on the team emerged (Bayless/Conley) but even more so where Gay's shots and usage went---a higher usage rate for Gasol, their best player. So it isn't Gay vs. Prince. Trading Rudy Gay allowed for a better/higher usage of Gasol/Randolph. A good trade off, indeed .

Their biggest mistake was panicking and moving Ellington to save money. Gay had to be traded

Post Rudy Gay trade they had the third best record in the league. I don't mind the trade.

To me,  the Grizzlies offense looks off. When they had their run two years ago (also without gay) it was made by an incredible disciplined team who ran EVERYTHING through the post. This team doesn't seem to be able to get the ball there and when they do there isn't a ton of time to spare.

My biggest issue with the trade is them taking on Ed Davis. He's actually a player I like, but in losing Gay and Ellington (and Mayo in the offseason) they desperately need some kind of shooting and perimeter scoring. So to me, they should've either insisted on getting back Terrence Ross or found a fourth partner (which wouldn't be too difficult because again, Ed Davis is a very nice young prospect).
