I don't do it often, cuz my kids are grown and emancipated and I just put on old stuff that I find once-in-a-while, but I also understand being a new parent, and I have no problem with people who are crazy about their kids posting whenever they want.

This is a free country, and people have the right to post whatever they want, whenever they want, (within the law, of course), without others trying to put restrictions on their excitement or pride, (and even if it's something we don't like or agree with).

But does a parent have the right to post a picture of a child, if the child doesn't want it to be posted?

By no means am I suggesting that folks don't have a right to post whatever they want, I'm just saying it is annoying. I love kids. A picture here and there is nice. But I have some friends that tread on the line of spamming their kids. Baffles me.

The right? Of course! Are they breaking the law? It's their child ... if they know it's embarrassing them or hurting their feelings, then I would hope they'd be aware enough and kind enough to take their child's feelings into consideration, (which most good parents do), but they certainly have the right, within the constraints and guidelines of the law.

I don't do Facebook, but I am in agreement with you.  I see my friend's kids (most of them grown now) occasionally and have never found myself yearning for a picture -- even the the one's I see rarely.  To send pics to family (esp grandparents) regularly is one thing. To friends, I think frequent pics would be at best politely tolerated and at worst an annoyance.

But there are certainly kinder people than me and I bet some people enjoy seeing pics of others' kids on a regular basis.  Once a year is more than enough for me.

For the most part, those under the age of 18 have very little in the way of 'rights' in our society.  As a minor, you are essentially the 'property' (although property is really not the right term) of your parents.  This isn't to say that you don't have basic human rights, or that your parents aren't without restriction as to the manner in which they can treat you.  But yes, for the most part, parents are in control.  So, to answer your question; yes, your parents are free to post pictures of you at their sole discretion (so long as the pictures are not of an illegal nature).

Trust me, when I was your age I felt similar to you about what 'rights' I should have, but with age you'll see why things are the way they are.

Good lord I sound like an old fuddy-duddy-argh!

Honestly, I find 95% of everything on FaceBook annoying ... but if something annoys me, I just move on, and too many pics of the same kid would bring the same response from me, but I still have no problem with people who want to do so. There is no feeling in the world like being a new/proud parent, so I guess I just have a bit more tolerance in that area than I do many others.

I mean.. of course they have the right. But I do think a fair amount of parents don't understand the privacy settings on facebook, and even if they do, there are still tons of ways they can get into the wrong hands.

You read stories about pedophile websites and message boards stealing photos and reposting them, and its just..its sickening.

Then, you have the stories about suddenly appearing in an ad on a billboard in Lithuania or something...

I don't know, the whole thing creeps me out.

That would creep me out, too, but again, doesn't that really come down to the judgement of the parent?

I mean, I wouldn't post anything that anyone could construe as improper or of the ilk for anyone to pervert in any way, but there's still probably some whacko that may do so.

That kind of thing is a judgement call, and the rest is beyond our control.

If a parent is "creeped out" enough about something like that happening, then by all means, they shouldn't post any pics.

But they should be mature enough to consider the ramifications of doing so, and balance that with their desire to show off their kids.

The internet has made this world a much smaller place, but also a place where the rules have changed, and where, like it or not, much is out of our hands once it's posted.

Once or twice a month.

Unless it's an important event your kid is in, there's no reason to post a ton of your kid's pictures.
