I don't do it often, cuz my kids are grown and emancipated and I just put on old stuff that I find once-in-a-while, but I also understand being a new parent, and I have no problem with people who are crazy about their kids posting whenever they want.
This is a free country, and people have the right to post whatever they want, whenever they want, (within the law, of course), without others trying to put restrictions on their excitement or pride, (and even if it's something we don't like or agree with).
But does a parent have the right to post a picture of a child, if the child doesn't want it to be posted?
The right? Of course! Are they breaking the law? It's their child ... if they know it's embarrassing them or hurting their feelings, then I would hope they'd be aware enough and kind enough to take their child's feelings into consideration, (which most good parents do), but they certainly have the right, within the constraints and guidelines of the law.
I mean.. of course they have the right. But I do think a fair amount of parents don't understand the privacy settings on facebook, and even if they do, there are still tons of ways they can get into the wrong hands.
You read stories about pedophile websites and message boards stealing photos and reposting them, and its just..its sickening.
Then, you have the stories about suddenly appearing in an ad on a billboard in Lithuania or something...
I don't know, the whole thing creeps me out.
That would creep me out, too, but again, doesn't that really come down to the judgement of the parent?
I mean, I wouldn't post anything that anyone could construe as improper or of the ilk for anyone to pervert in any way, but there's still probably some whacko that may do so.
That kind of thing is a judgement call, and the rest is beyond our control.
If a parent is "creeped out" enough about something like that happening, then by all means, they shouldn't post any pics.
But they should be mature enough to consider the ramifications of doing so, and balance that with their desire to show off their kids.
The internet has made this world a much smaller place, but also a place where the rules have changed, and where, like it or not, much is out of our hands once it's posted.
