Ugh..
First: Josh Smith might become a free agent. He may wind up resigning with Atlanta. It is by no means a guarantee that he wants to leave. At the very least, he might enter Free Agency, test the waters, and wind up back with ATL.
Second: Let's assume for the sake of argument he does not want to re-sign with Atlanta and makes it known to management that he intends to become a Free Agent. Atlanta for sure will try to trade him, but they will not take back long term salary for him. Look at what Danny Ferry did this offseason. Do you think he wants to trade an expiring deal for 3.5 years of Jeff Green? 2.5 years of Brandon Bass? No.
Third: There is no way on this planet Smith gets traded to the C's without Avery Bradley in the package. That is an absolute deal breaker in my opinion, and most likely Danny Ainge's opinion as well. Just in case anyone forgot: there is a reason Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo were drafted in the 20's. They did not become worthy of All Star trade bait by their performance in Summer League. Sullinger still has a medical red flag. Melo is still a Brazilian with all of 6 years playing the sport.
Finally: Even if Ferry agreed to a Bass, Sullinger, Lee, whoever package of some sort...why would we decimate the depth and youth that was so nimbly created this offseason...a team structure built specifically to give us the flexbility we had none of last season...why, why, why, WHY would we dump all of that to get one player who is, at best, a fringe All-Star???
And I say this as someone who likes Josh Smith.
