A bit surprised about Christmas and really surprised about Smith. I assume these are non-guaranteed deals with dates for when they become guaranteed?

Celtics sign G Jamar Smith to a partially-guaranteed minimum contract.
Smith shot 39.3 percent from downtown while playing in the Czech Republic last year, and was similarly proficient during Summer League in Orlando. He's likely to end up back in the D-League unless something happens to Rajon Rondo, Jason Terry and/or Keyon Dooling.

Celtics sign C Jason Collins.
Collins was another veteran's minimum addition to Boston's bench, where he'll spend more time mentoring rookies Fab Melo and Jared Sullinger than he will actually playing. Even Chris Wilcox is ahead of Collins on the depth chart, but he'll be useful defensively against monsters like Dwight Howard.

Celtics sign G Dionte Christmas.
Christmas was offered a partially-guaranteed deal on the strength of his play at Summer League, where he averaged 14.2 points and made 45 percent of his 3-pointers. Even if the 6'5" SG manages to make Boston's regular season roster, he won't be worth owning in fantasyland.

Celtics re-sign G Keyon Dooling.
Dooling missed 22 games due to injury during the shortened 2011-12 season, averaging 14 minutes per game, and we don't expect his playing time to increase with both Courtney Lee and Jason Terry filling out the Celtics' backcourt. The deal is for one year at the veteran's minimum.

All this is old news. Smith is a camp body and did well in summer league (and in Maine last season too, I hear). Christmas has an outside shot to make the roster, but will likely head to Europe if he doesn't.

Wonder why Smith got a partially guaranteed contract he didn't show anything

Dooling is a huge signing in my eyes. Might not seem very significant but his role is going to be huge for is again. On and off the court. Mainly off.

yep if for nothing else than rondo respects his vet opinion
also i think dooling has a set on him and if given 10 minutes in a playoff game he'll give it his all AND won't hesitate to shoot a game winner
collins will help more than other end of bench bigs in the past
other 2 i'd say are training camp guys,  we don't need christmas (we all need christmas  ::)  ) if joseph gives it, sg spot is jam packed, lee, bradley, terry no need for 4th string

I just don't see much point in Smith or Christmas. Both are in their mid 20s and neither of them would be expected to get any playing time without multiple injuries to other guards on the team.

Exactly. This guy is going to do anything and everything, and make any sacrifice to win.

The guarantee was reported as $25k last week.  It's really just being paid for training camp and being willing to go to Maine again.

Sure he did -- he had a great summer league in an Eddie House type of role.

These are standard "we'll give you some guaranteed money to come to camp" contracts, in which we retain the option to keep the player for cheap if they suddenly play out of their mind. I don't expect both of them to make the team -- but even if they'll sit at the end of the bench, you need those type of players too on a basketball team.
