This may have been answered but if the Celtics negotiated a decreased salary for Garnett before the July 1 deadline with the understanding that he could still retire, what type of salary cap ramifications would it have for the team if he does in fact retire later in the summer? Would they still have to pay him that salary and/or would the full portion (or a fraction) of the retired player's salary count against the cap.

I was trying to remember how Rasheed's remaining year affected the C's cap after he retired but couldn't remember if it did.

Thanks for the answer.

I don't think a soon-to-be expiring contract can be renegotiated at this point in the season.

Sheed had another year remaining on his contract when he retired, under a player option. He declined it as part of a buyout, with any remaining guaranteed salary evenly spread over the course of a couple seasons. So, slightly different situation than Garnett's.

My question was really just if we signed him to a decreased $ deal (like 1 yr - 10M or something) and then he retired shortly after signing that deal, how would that affect the salary cap for the upcoming season...are we on the books for the entire contract even if he doesn't play a game?

Yes.

Why would KG sign a contract before retiring?

Nevermind. My point was simply how much would the Celtics be risking if he signed a new contract before 100% making his mind up about retirement, hypothetically so that they wouldn't be held hostage by his current $21M salary hold.

His question, I think was: say, for example, KG was either going to signa 1 year, $8M deal or retire. If he takes until the fall to decide, we have his cap hold against the cap all that time. If he signed the contract now and then decided in the fall then we'd have $4M more in cap space while he made up his mind.

Exactly. My original question was just if there was any advantage to knowing exactly how much we would have to spend (after signing KG) and to have it free at an opportune time when free agency starts. Also, was trying to clarify if/for how long/how much of a retired player's salary counts against the team's salary cap for the length of his contract (in this scenario, a 1 year contract for KG). Thanks.
