This whole Amare thing got me thinking.  Shouldn't the glass in the fire extinguisher cases be the kind that doesn't cut when it is broken.  More like wind shield glass.  I mean it has to be glass so you can break it away if you need to, but it doesn't need to be the kind that when it breaks can cause serious injury.  I mean what if kids were to break it or even just a person wanting to put out a fire that just went quickly.  And yes, I realize kids aren't going to be in the locker-room, but I'm sure they have fire extinguishers in schools, do those have the same type of glass in them as well?

They showed a picture of a fire extinguisher on ESPN (not sure its the one he punched, it was a metal case with a small glass window and a handle to open it. Different than the break glass sort of fire alarm systems.

Makes a ton of sense that it hurt him bad if he was punching a metal box with a glass window.

Don't the cases have handles to open them?

yes, but they are almost always locked so the extinguishers aren't tampered with or gotten into by people who shouldn't be getting into them.

If I remember correctly, I have seen fire extinguisher cases that have a metal bar attached by a chain which is connected to the box. I think you use the bar to break the glass to remove the fire extinguisher so injuries like this don't happen.

I could be wrong but I am sure I've seen such a thing.

generally a handle, unless in places of public tampering, in which case a method for breaking the glass (other than rage induced shoryuken) is provided

yeah, but you still then have to reach through the broken glass, it might fly off, it might hit you on the way down, it might be all over the ground, etc.  Just because you use a bar to break the glass doesn't mean the glass isn't a hazard.  It just seems like something that should have safety glass installed.
