You are right. Walton is not stupid...he is very intelligent.
He had a very bad stuttering problem when he was young, and suffered from extreme shyness because of it.
I have heard him speak at a book signing, and he was interesting and wellspoken, and had lots of fun stories to tell.
That said, I find him extremely irritating announcing a game. To me his style is intrusive and overwhelms the play with too many non essential points and personal stories.
That is just my opinion.
