The goal is championships
The strategy is Williams-Howard
The tactic is aquiring 6 of the 8 rotations players needed to attract them for $26 million or less.

That means rookie contracts and role-players, guys that can shoot and defend, and some scoring off the bench. My answer is simple:

Starters - Gerald Henderson, Corey Brewer, Irsan Ilyasova*
Rotation - Isaiah Thomas, Mickael Pietrus, Derrick Favors

That is an $14,309,755 rotation *excluding the Ilyasova contract. Everyone hustles, defends and moves the ball well enough to keep defenses honest. They are young, fast and athletic. Thomas brings a scoring spark. Favors brings a lot of defense, size and upside to the 4 or 5 position.

Bench - Avery Bradley, JJ Johnson, E'Twuan Moore, Greg Stiemsma

That is a $3,751,240 bench. Bradley and Johnson are expensive pieces that I would clear for veteran depth. I am assuming we have to move our first rounders to aquire some of those players above.

Williams-Henderson-Brewer-Ilyasova-Howard with Thomas-Pietrus-Favors off the bench is a championship squad.

*Ilyasova is a controversial choice, I understand that. He is young, has good size, rebounds and can knock down the three. He is tough. I like him a lot. I figured we would pay him $4-$5 per season. In case he is not your cup of tea, we can spend $8,000,000 on that spot, and still get everyone else.

"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

How exactly do you plan to acquire those players? It's impossible with the assets on hand. Ilyasova will also be quite more expensive than $4 millions per year.

I cannot imagine it would be to hard to aquire those guys.

Henderson for a first round pick, Brewer for some flotsam and jetsam a first. Probably swap Rondo for Favors straight up. Pietrus is in house, Ilyasova is a free agent. Thomas is a backup pointguard, maybe send a couple second rounders?

There is no questions about our ability to aquire the role players - we have Pierce, Ray and Rondo. We can take a bad contract and amnesty it.

The trades do not have to be equal in return; we are selling talent to aquire low cost, skilled role players.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Corey Brewer barely made the rotation for the Mavs last year. He ain't getting you anywhere near a championship. Henderson will require more than a first round pick because he is Jordan's protege project- he will be overvalued by MJ and his yes men.
I do like Ilyasova (not sure he's that controversial?) but he will go for at least the 8 million you talk about. That's if he doesn't go home to play in Europe.
If you want to poach role players, go after Chicago's bench or some vets who are ring chasing like S Jackson, T Prince etc.
Old guys that can still run and gun. Maybe splash out and get Ryan Anderson if you can't get Ilyasova.

All of the above is a complete pipe dream. Howard might as well go to the Nets for a similar squad in a bigger market.
He has no reason to come here, neither does D Will- unless you're implying a Rondo for Williams trade to force Howards hand here?
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.
