According to Chris Broussard, Williams would like to be traded from ATL:

Quote
Marvin Williams continues to be an ancillary part of Atlanta's offense and sources say he would like a trade.

Williams is averaging just 9.6 points per game this season and would like to find a situation where his usage increases.

What are the thoughts on this deal?

ATL Receives: Ray Allen $10,000,000

BOS Receives: Marvin Williams: $7,500,000
                     Eric Dampier: $713,666

I'd prefer to get Jason Collins in this deal but he's not available in the trade machine for ESPN. I'm sure someone can figure out how this works.

Why Boston Does it: I think Marvin Williams is a suitable Jeff Green Replacement on a reasonable contract. We can mitigate Ray's exit by moving Pietrus into the starting 2 role. I also believe he still has some untapped potential.

Jason Collins or Dampier would give us some valuable interior depth. Collins is an excellent interior defender and would be key if we saw ORL in the playoffs.
Dampier would be a throw in if they wouldn't offer Collins for interior deth without the same returns.

Why ATL does it: I think Allen would be great for them. He would provide some much needed veteran leadership and his production could steal them a playoff series. Hinrich could spell him off the bench to compensate for his defense.
ATL also gets out of the Williams contact for the following two seasons.

I think Marvin Williams is a nice risk for the Celtics and is still only 24 years old.

As you point out, he's got two more seasons after this one and I don't think he's good enough to waste the cap space on.  Williams has never lived up to the potential he showed early on and has been a totally average player for a few seasons now.  He could blossom and his size and athleticism would probably make Boston slightly better this season, but that doesn't strike me as too tempting a possiblity to pass up.

He can't be traded until March 1 and, since he is on a one-year contract and will be a Bird free agent, he can't be traded without his consent.

Nah, not worth clogging up the C's cap flexibility.

Marvin Williams is a high level role player but the Celtics need to be concentrating on using their cap space on top tier talent instead of role players.

I don't know if the difference in the two players is as great as you say.

Green: Career PER: 12.92 13 PPG 4.8 RPG - 25 years old
Williams: Career PER 16.34  9.6 PPG 5.4 RPG - 24 years old

I would argue that Williams is younger and more efficient. Also, (...and I hate to go down this road) he is healthy.

I hope that Jeff Green is better than ever when he returns, but that is in no way a sure thing.

The ultimate risk with Marvin is taking on his remainin three years. However, I believe this is colse to the same risk we planned on taking with Jeff Green.

Im not a Marvin WIlliams fan especially since he was taken 2nd overall ahead of Cp3 D will nd others but as a future cornerstone 9 points nd 5 rebounds wont cut it I'd rather take a flyer on Beasley

I'd take on marvin's contract if it were part of a deal for josh smith. Jo or bass and ray or paul for smith and williams. We might have to throw idon a first but that's still a deal I  have interest in.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Anything that puts Mikael Pietrus in the starting 5 is a disaster.
