Another reason to start someone else is that the starting lineup would get a little more continuity.  JO not only sucks, but he's been in and out of the lineup...and he hasn't even really gotten his anual legit injury yet.  Let Johnson or Wilcox get in a groove and figure out where they fit in with the starters before it's too late.

  • Rondo = Good
I think almost all people here would agree, though, that it's not a good thing for him to play anywhere close to starter minutes.

Given the Big 3's decline, I don't think we can afford to have a player whose only real value is on the defensive end -- especially in the fourth quarter, when Rondo tends to be a liability on that end as well.

20-25 minutes per game is a reasonable number for him.  Which, as pointed out, is what he is doing.

But that's part of why Kendrick Perkins is no longer a Celtic.

I think he's way too much of an offensive liability, on a team that struggles to score, to play that big of a role.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Hard to believe he was once a 20/10 allstar big. I didn't expect much from him and he still managed to disappoint. The guy is a worse finisher than Perk and his gather is just as bad.

Not just 20/10 like Zach Randolph either...a dominant defender.

Weight and injuries (probably correlated) have robbed him of his ability to consistently play with any athleticism.

It's crazy too because he has never had a major injury. Just a ton of smaller injuries which is why he will not be remembered as a very tough player.

After watching him disappear in the playoffs for Miami many couldn't figure out why in the world Danny gave him the full MLE for 2 seasons.

Still trying to figure that out...

For what it's worth, 6 of Perk's 47 shots (through Feb 14) "at the rim" are listed as dunks.  20 of JO's 47 shots at the rim are listed as dunks.  But Perkins is listed at 63.6% on layups and O'Neal has a horrible 40.7%.  So, the overall effect is that they shoot close to the same percentages this season.

Bah, we can't have a thread with unanimous feelings towards a player, booooring!

I didn't get to see last night's game (MN here), but looking at the box score;

J.O. 22 mins +5
J.J. 25 mins -15
G.S. 13 mins -10

For all of his faults, with 22 minutes of play, the Celtics were up by 5.  The 26 minutes he was on the bench, the Celtics were -15.  Dunno if it was good/bad timing on streaks or what, but you can't blame him for the loss last night; the team was winning with him on the court.  Unless you think in his 22 minutes of play the Celtics should of been up by 16 to cover for the time he was off the court.

His offense is terrible.  Though looking at his career, his teams haven't produced with him on the court (career 101 Off rating, oofta).

You've convinced me. It was his 1 point and 2 rebounds in 22 minutes that made the Celtics +5. It had nothing to do with the fact that Rondo and the rest of the starters were on the court when he was. J.J. and his lousy 10 points and 5 rebounds in about the same amount of time has to be the reason they were -15. Had nothing to do with the rest of the bench.

While I believe you were in fact kidding, couldn't they just put him down, Really he's awful, awful, awful. I could even understand some of his lack of rebounding due to injuries, but couldn't he at least box someone out so the Celts don't keep getting killed on the boards? I just can't stomach watching him stand around watching every rebound go to someone else.

I will give you he does that charges, as most people who don't move are apt to do.

If JO were backing up Wilcox, we might all be pretty happy with both of them.

JO does not suck. Well actually he does...He is what he is. He's old, he's injured and he's slow. The problem is that Doc plays him too much at the wrong times.

Doc has gotten complacent with his lineups. When in doubt play the big 4.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I would take JO in a 7 game series starting in the paint with KG than anyone else on our roster. The Bulls, the 76ers, the Pacers- all playoff teams with size and people want Wilcox at 6 foot 9 and questionable defense starting because he can run the floor?
No way.
You hate JO if you don't like defense or you don't understand how important his defense is to our team.
He is overpaid and his injuries are a pain but his defense with KG is the only thing that will keep us in a lot of games against the above mentioned teams. The guy take so many charges and blocks so many shots, he rotates extremely well on defense and alters shots by driving 2 and 3 guards all the time.

Guy plays 5-6 mins a quarter anyways.

I don't think it matters too much.  He can't physically play more minutes than it takes for him to foul out, anyways.  I just wish he could dish out more thuggish hard fouls like Shaq could.

All I know is that Deng abused Paul....I can't pin this one on JO alone.
