If it happens: Boston will regret trading Rajon Rondo

We'd regret it if Danny traded Rondo for a hill of beans.  If he traded him for an impact, star-level player, I think we'd be fine.  Rondo's inconsistent play might have sunk his trade value below that level, but if Danny can somehow extract a good return for Rondo, there's no reason why we shouldn't explore trading him.

Good post.  I love Rondo as much as the next guy, but if a player like Chris Paul can be had by letting Rondo go, I think you have to do it. If that's the type of impact, star-level player you get back, then you pull the trigger & never look back. No regrets there. You have to explore the options, & I think that is something Danny is good at doing.

Whether you like Ainge or not, the guy can sell his product & knows how to get his players out there on the block. The guy knows how to get the waters tested. Whether or not he's willing to trade is another story. Has to be the right deal.

The other wildcard in all of this is Avery Bradley.  You have a 21 year old coming up and getting better & better each game.  He can already make a quick impact on the defensive side of things.

If this organization truly believes in Bradley, as I think they do, then they won't regret moving Rondo for another all star talent. Obviously, the 21 yr old Bradley still has work to put in.  So they may not be ready to trade Rondo just yet, & are just starting to test the waters to see Rondo's value around the league.  Once Bradley becomes ready to take over, & they're sure he can do it, then they might pull the trigger on a Rondo trade.

The problem is that Avery isn't a PG; he's a really undersized SG. Avery is a great prospect defensively, but he lacks instincts and court vision to effectively run an offense for 35+ mins a night. I think it'll be dangerous to try to cast him in the PG role full time because that's just not his game. Can he work on his ball handling skills? Of course. But can he be an effective floor general with trustworthy instincts? I have my doubts.

He was good as a starter while Rondo was out, but Doc said he simplified the offense and let Paul play power forward so AB could just focus on his defense. That works well for awhile, but Paul won't be around forever and we can't guarantee his successor will be able to fulfill power forward duties to take pressure off of AB.

I think the focus on Avery is just letting him develop into a defensive menace. Having a defensive minded guard will be an asset in the future, but there's nothing in his past or his present to suggest he can really be an effective, full-time PG. He's a great situational player.

I think we all have our doubts about Avery being a full time PG.  But we also had our doubts about Rondo being a full time PG when he was 21.  Tough to pin point just what Bradley could become.  Extremely raw and still very young at the moment.  The next 2 years are big for him and his development.

Paul won't be around forever, which means you could try and replace him using Rondo as bait.  If somebody is giving you the world for Rondo, or a top 5 pick in a loaded draft, you have to consider that and can fall back using Bradley, Dooling, & Moore at the PG position.

Ainge has setup this team nicely & has left his options wide open.  For this year and the very near future.
