I think the main idea behind the trade idea was that what the Pacers are lacking right now is a guy they can give the ball to and say "we need a basket right now -- get a basket."  
They're lacking an offensive focal point, in particular they lack a single player who's a talented passer/creator for others. They have quite a few players who can score.

They don't need an outright scorer like Monta as much as they need a better PG or wing who can distribute.

that's probably true, but i don't really see how they could get such a player, unless they want to trade for a season and a half of Steve Nash.
