Help me figure this out.  I'm in full-blown tank for a top pick mode.  That means, I'm fully on board with trading Pierce to Indiana (they have 14 mil in cap room) for either a 1st rounder, Paul George or both.  I don't want Pierce on our books next year eating up cap room.

That leaves KG and Ray stuck on this dreadful roster.  It would make sense to trade them.  I don't want to bring back salary in a trade (since they both expire).

Ray makes 10 mil
KG makes 21 mil

Are there ANY trade partners out there who would be interested in getting either one of these guys (presumably for a playoff run) and have expiring salaries to match?  I sincerely doubt it.

Here are some Examples:

#1 Portland:   Looks like they are going to make the playoffs.  Marcus Camby is a 12.8 mil expiring contract.  Do they have any use for Ray Allen in a playoff run?  Ray for Camby and a late 1st rounder?.. then we just buy out Camby since we're taking.

Verdict:  Probably not.  They probably need Camby at center.

#2 Clippers:   Mo Williams is 8.5 mil expiring.  Would Ray Allen help the Clippers in a playoff run?  Ray for Mo Williams and a future 1st rounder.  Then we just buy out Williams since we're tanking.

Verdict:  Probably not.  Mo Williams is pretty effective for them.

#3 Dallas:  Jason Terry is 11 mil expiring.   Would Ray Allen help Dallas repeat as champions?  Ray for Jason Terry and a late 1st rounder.  Then we just buy out Terry since we are tanking.

Verdict:  Probably not.  Jason Terry is really effective for them.

So far I'm 0-3... and not a team in sight who can match 21 mil expiring for KG.  (expiring Camby + expiring Ray Felton?.... naaah... not a chance Portland does that)

Trading both is tough.

But you could trade Ray to Chicago for Kyle Korver and CJ Watson (each with only one fully guaranteed year remaining), and Charlotte's 2012 lottery protected 1st rounder.

How about...

Denver:  Andre Miller is 8 mil expiring.  Can Ray help them with a playoff push?  Ray for Miller and a 1st rounder.

Verdict:  Probably not.  Miller has been effective for them off the bench.

I wasn't sure what the status of Korver and Watson's contracts were.  If it means they wouldn't be on our books next year, this would be a totally logical trade.

Only $500K of Korver's contract for next year is guaranteed, according to shamsports.com.

Alright.  So send Pierce to Indiana for a 1st rounder.  Send Ray to Chicago for Korver/Watson (cut them both) and a 1st rounder... and then I guess KG can retire early... or we can buy him out so he can join whatever team he wants in a title run (Prob Miami.  Lol)

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
I think tonly players we can trade for are tied to long term deals. Which is a tough thing to consider. Since we are looking at that cap room to rebuild.

Wdleehi brought this up in another thread.

Utah has a 10.8 mil trade exception from trading Okur.

Ray to Utah for that trade exception + a draft pick looks like it would work.

I Suspect Houston Rockets could use K G and send few if any players back or we could ask for one or two of their rookie players such as Patrick Patterson or courtney lee and a first round pick. They are way under the cap.

At around the start of last season, Jermaine O'Neal said he'd like to finish his career as a Pacer.

Indiana has tons of cap room right now. Too much, in fact. They are roughly $6 million below the minimum salary floor.

I'm not suggesting JO could command a 1st rounder at this point in his career. But, trading him to Indiana for a 2nd rounder would generate a sizeable trade exception, which could come in handy later on.

Houston isn't under the cap and they do not have expiring contracts.

That's fine with me, but I'd prefer to have Indiana swallow Pierce's contract (since they are the only team that could do it) and hopefully get a young prospect or 1st rounder out of it.

There you go:  http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=86ggfbc  ... Even with no draft picks I think Indiana says no.
