It seemed the writing was on the wall with this one, but Jim Tressel has officially resigned as head coach of Ohio State.  Luke Fickell takes over as interim head coach, but I'm not sure he will have the pull to take over full time at the end of next season.

Ohio State is perhaps the best coaching job in the country (certainly right there with USC, Texas, and Florida).  It should be an interesting job search after next season.

Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson

rumors abound Columbus that Urban Meyer will take over in 2012 after one year of Fickell.

If they can get Urban Meyer to coach that team after the NCAA comes down on them for these infractions I will be so amazed I will just have to call OSU my daddy.

This is like if Joe Paterno or Pete Carrol had to resign.  And Pete did move on. He resigned too.
Then they got hit with years of no bowls, 30 scholarship losses, vacating entire seasons including a championship and banning a Heisman winner, and the Heisman was vacated.  I've never heard of such things. And what Tressel did was WAAAAAAYYYYY worse.  WAY.

This may be just me but I kinda think Tressel was a total - insert highly politically incorrect and offensively colorful adjective here - till the very end.

I mean there are some days maybe you don't want to distract the world and take the spotlight.  Maybe you're daughter's wedding.  Veteran's Day. Memorial Day. Mother's Day. Father's Day.

Maybe he just hoped we'd be distracted by the weekend and not think of him.   Business on a business day there Tressel.  Ok?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I guess what bothers me about this, and other situations where a coach gets in trouble and resigns or is fired, is that the school has to find a new coach [that usually isn't as good], but the coach can go on and find another school. It really doesn't make any sense that they are forced to break ties if the coach can move on somewhere else (no matter how severe the infraction).

I don't see how this is worse than the Reggie Bush stuff at USC.  I don't really know what the solution is.  But Tressel should have resigned long ago.

Should be Tressel's ticket to a lucrative NFL contract.
