like we will next summer to be major players in the free agent market. We technically have enough cap space to offer 2 max contracts even if a "hard cap" of 62million$ which was originally offered is put in place...

I cant recall really which is why I think next summer is going to be interesting. If we can get a top 15pick, a big FA signing or two, then were back in it.

we have alot to offer free agents out there...a star point guard in Rondo, ownership willing to spend, a respected coach in Doc rivers...

I think one of the things you can almost take to the bank after the next CBA is that big time FA's will practically never hit the open market.  Another Bron, Melo, Amare, Boozer, Bosh summer will never happen.  (granted Melo was a trade but you get the idea)

I don't expect that to ever happen again regardless of the new CBA.  Nobody wants to end up like the Cavs and Raptors.  I fully expect the new CBA to have provisions in it to empower teams to hold onto their major stars (even with a hard cap), but whether it does or not, I think teams will make sure they aren't left with nothing if their stars make up their minds to go.

The last time we had any cap space at all was when...  we signed Travis Knight?  Dano Barros?

In terms of our current cap space, we're not going to be able to sign two max free agents.  I broke this down in another thread:

Quote
We've got $27.79 million committed if we dump Bradley, or $29.42 million committed if we keep him.  You also have to factor in a roster charge if we don't have at least 12 players signed; the amount of this charge is $490k x number of player below 12.  That's another $4.4 million if we keep Bradley, or $4.9 million if we don't.

That brings committed salaries to approximately $33.82 million (with Bradley) or $32.69 million if we don't.  Then, there's JuJuan Johnson's salary, that's going to be somewhere around $900k, bringing the range up to $33.59 million to $34.72 million.  On top of that, there will be the rookie salaries of our two picks next year; that's probably around another $3 million, assuming the Clippers pick is around 11th or 12th and our own pick is around 25th.

So, we've got $36.59 to $37.72 million committed.  Assuming a $62 million cap, that leaves $24.28 to $25.41 million, and that's not even taking into account Jeff Green or other free agents (all of whom we would have to renounce to get the above cap space).  Assuming Dwight Howard gets something in the $18 to $20 million range, that means that we're unlikely to be able to afford a MLE contract this offseason (somewhere around $5.8 million, and more in the second year) if we want to target a max free agent.

Danny has since picked up Bradley's option.  That puts our cap number for the summer of 2011 to $33.82 million + JuJuan Johnson's contract + holds for our other first rounders.  Some of the numbers are a bit off (i.e., subtract a cap hold if you're counting JJ's contract, etc.) but I think the above demonstrates that the margin of error is pretty small, especially if the team wants to sign Jeff Green.

Worth noting, however, that a "max free agent" could sign a deal similar to Wade / James / Bosh that makes only 15 or 16 million in the first year in order to fit.

But yeah, we'll only have room for one, and I don't expect any of them to hit the open market anyway.  Even if they do, the C's won't be the #1 destination for any of them.

I think we have a good chance as anyone to sign a max FA if any of them hit the open market...theres really only a limited number of teams for them to choose from with cap space..and we have more to offer than alot of them in regards to winning, coaching etc.
