The Celtics should absolutely be looking at this guy hard in free agency. I do think his free agency is restricted and it would be hard for Memphis to see him go but if the Celtics sign him to a big offer sheet, Memphis may very well not match it or maybe do a sign and trade. Gasol is exactly what the Celtics need for now and for the future. He's a fantastic defensive center, similar to Perk but has a much better offensive game. I'm starting to think more and more that Dwight Howard is not a realistic possibilty in 2012, he will not come to Boston and there are no other centers in 2012 who have the upside and production Gasol would have. DeAndre Jordan would be a good option as well but Gasol is clearly the better player now and would be a better fit for the Celtics, He's the type of center you can safely put on to defend a big man like Dwight Howard.

All well and good, but the Celtics can only offer what everyone else can (at least): the MLE.

I totally agree
I made a thread about it

Gasol to me is a better option, cause he has more upside
And mostly, he's more of a team player. Can get his points within the offense

Howard however is not a good passer and is sort of a black hole. Like his 49 and 16 game where he dominated, but his teammates still lost

If we can't get for the Mid Level, they should trade some players to Memphis. I wan't this guy

He is one of the few big men that is young and decent left in the league. Of course he'd be a great asset.

But, I think they would let alot of others go , before giving up Marc...he is TOO valuable.

I might be wrong , but I doubt it.

Danny has made it clear that his target is Dwight. He cleared cap space for 2012 , traded his starting center and got young potential/trade chips with Jeff Green and the clippers pick. You need a superstar to win in the NBA and while Gasol is a borderline all-star center , he has no chance of carrying a franchise the way Howard can.

I would also rather go after Javel McGee than Gasol too. He will be a restricted free agent next year, so if Danny can't get Howard he could still steal McGee away from washington. I think he would be a much better fit with Rondo than Gasol would be.

Marc Gasol will never be allowed to leave Memphis, and he'd be stupid for wanting to.

Don't see how you can argue for this guy instead of Howard because of his 'upside'.
The fact is he will never be as dominant as Howard in any aspect other than assists- and passing ability isn't exactly the number 1 thing on our wishlist of centers.
I like Gasol a lot and if Howard wasn't available I would put this guy in my top 3 options after Nene/Deandre Jordan.
Putting ahead of Howard as a preference is ludicrous though in my opinion.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.
