How much does this affect our cap situation and our ability to sign an impact player or two here? Not talking CP3/Dwight big, just a young piece for rebuilding or someone who could possibly extend the championship window another year.

First, you have think who that someone is, and the conclusion is that there is no-one available this year, so whether Garnett plays out his remaining year or retires doesn't make much difference.

Second, Shaq makes next to nothing, so his contract is, for all practical cap purposes, irrelevant.

Third, replacing Garnett with anyone who is not at least as good as Howard will means that the window has effectively slammed shut.

Wow, wasn't even thinking when I wrote that... Just a rebuilding piece, forget about extending the championship window

i don't see kg retiring just yet.  He may not be a superstar, but a lot of teams would lovr to have him.

KG is not retiring. He has too much game left and is owed $21M next year. Why would he retire? I could see after next season, but not after this season.

Typically, the best NBA teams were built by getting the biggest pieces first. Therefore, this team should live and die by Dwight Howard's impending free agency. Anything else, and it's going to be the early 2000s all over again, I am afraid.

Rumor is that his knee is worse than people think, and he's playing with a significant amount of pain.

Plus, I suspect that the $20 million that he's owed may be dwarfed by what he's making via endorsements.

He's been dropping a ton of subtle little hints all year that this is it. Where'd you hear that rumor though? Any sources?

KG has said multiple times that if there is a lockout he will hang 'em up.  There will almost certainly be a lockout, so it wouldn't surprise me if he retires, especially after the way things ended this year.

Don't remember. I just recall there was some speculation about this early in the season. I don't think it was ever seriously pursued in the press.
