To be honest, I do think that Rondo might be a little overvalued as a defender. He's arguably the greatest "stealer" in the NBA; however, his willingness to roam often lets his man get easy looks.
When I checked opponent's stats in March Rondo held opponents to a lower efg%, fewer rebounds, fewer assists, a lower PER and a fewer points per possession than any other starting point guard in the league. He's also as good as you'll see at denying the ball when players try and pass to the guy he's guarding.
The fact that Rondo was hampered much of the year with foot/hamstring issues and (for whatever reason) had most of a month of bad play late in the season and was *still* able to easily get the most votes of any pg is fairly impressive.
Just out of curiosity how does Tony match up in those categories (although he might not have played enough minutes for it to be fair)? As good as Rondo is compared to PGs, I don't really think he's on Tony's level, and he's certainly not as versatile.
Not sure, but my recollection is that Tony's numbers were probably better than Rondo's. I don't think that Rondo's man to man defense is as good as Tony's, but it's worth noting that TA has a much smaller role on offense than Rondo and also plays only about half the minutes Rondo does so he can expend much more effort on defense.
