 The whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you god.

 And if you say No. What happens? Do they proceed? Throw you out? What happens?

 The lawyer doesn't always tell the truth, seems unfair.

You'd probably be held in contempt of court and fined.

Also, a refusal to swear an oath and hence failure to testify in many cases could mean that you fail to meet your burden of production and therefore you lose your case automatically.
