So, what about this insane deal?
DEN trades: Carmelo, Nene, Chauncey, Ely, Carter, Williams
NY trades: Felton, Gallinari, Chandler, Azubuike, Turiaf, Curry, two 1st rounders, cash
(In a separate deal, NY does the rumored Anthony Randolph and Roger Mason for 1st rounder deal with Minnesota).
Why for NY: A starting lineup of Amare / Nene / Carmelo / Fields / Chauncey is one of the best in the East, and makes the Knicks an outside contender while still preserving cap space for 2012. The pieces they're giving up -- Felton, Gallinari, Chandler -- would have to go at some point anyway if NY is going to fulfill its dream of landing a "big three".
Why for Denver: Primarily because this trade lets them shed a *ton* of salary, getting them below the luxury tax this season. Total savings would be upwards of $13 million in salary, plus $13 million in tax, plus around $2 million in league distributions from the luxury tax, plus whatever insurance is paying for Azubuike's contract. That's around $30 million for ownership, which is nothing to sneeze at. They pick up decent prospects in Gallinari and Chandler, and a good point guard on a very reasonable deal.
Ultimately, I think if Denver moves Nene it will be in a separate transaction, but something like this would be just too good for NY to pass up, right?
