So, what about this insane deal?

DEN trades:  Carmelo, Nene, Chauncey, Ely, Carter, Williams

NY trades:  Felton, Gallinari, Chandler, Azubuike, Turiaf, Curry, two 1st rounders, cash

(In a separate deal, NY does the rumored Anthony Randolph and Roger Mason for 1st rounder deal with Minnesota).

Why for NY:  A starting lineup of Amare / Nene / Carmelo / Fields / Chauncey is one of the best in the East, and makes the Knicks an outside contender while still preserving cap space for 2012.  The pieces they're giving up -- Felton, Gallinari, Chandler -- would have to go at some point anyway if NY is going to fulfill its dream of landing a "big three".

Why for Denver:  Primarily because this trade lets them shed a *ton* of salary, getting them below the luxury tax this season.  Total savings would be upwards of $13 million in salary, plus $13 million in tax, plus around $2 million in league distributions from the luxury tax, plus whatever insurance is paying for Azubuike's contract.  That's around $30 million for ownership, which is nothing to sneeze at.  They pick up decent prospects in Gallinari and Chandler, and a good point guard on a very reasonable deal.

Ultimately, I think if Denver moves Nene it will be in a separate transaction, but something like this would be just too good for NY to pass up, right?

This might just be crazy enough for me to like it... I repeat, might. The Knicks make out like bandits however, Billups, Melo, and Nene go straight into the starting lineup with Amare and fields and that makes them crazy good on paper at least. Thats a scary starting line to have to go up against.

Denver makes out fairly well, yet, I think they would hold out, yet again, for more. Felton and Galli are nice pick ups yet I dont think they do this deal without the Knicks including Fields. The are able to dump a boatload of cap space however, which is huge for a team that is looking to rebuild.

I like it for NY.

Then wait for  buyouts to see if you can field a good bench.

Murphy and Rip would clearly get large rolls on that team with a good chance to win on a big stage.  Great way to earn a big contract next year.

Getting Nene and Carmelo would be a huge coup for New York. Very strong core to build around.

I don't think the Nuggets want to move Nene though, we haven't heard any rumors about him despite his option clause.

I've been writing in threads for a while now that a 'Melo trade should include Nene in it.  One problem I've come up with is it's hard to match that high total of salaries with all attractive pieces.  Another is that posters keep responding with "Nene is a valuable piece.  Denver isn't going to throw him away for nothing."

So, here's the problem with this deal I think: Denver can propose that trade minus Nene and Turiaf and a pick and NYK would still say yes.  Then Denver can go trade Nene for more than Turiaf + a pick.

So Denver is supposed to give up their 1st AND 2nd best players just so the Knicks will take on Melo?

Puh-lease.

Chauncey doesnt fit with their rebuilding plans and Nene is a financial burden for them whether he picks up his 11 mil contract or signs a new one/extension. They would be happy to get rid of that extra money and get young talent in return.

I agree that they ought to get rid of Chauncey when they can, since he doesn't fit into their plans, but Nene is young and very talented.  He's shown the ability to carry the load for them at times with Melo out.  Nene has All-Star potential (especially in the West).

Without Melo, Nene should become the Nuggets primary building block.  Not ideal, of course, but they need to hold onto whatever they can.  It certainly does not make sense for them to give up Nene in a trade for the Knicks' riff-raff.

  Nene's 28.

Leaves the Celtics light on total number of players, but does work on NBA trade machine and I would likely do it.

Pistons get - Billups, Von Wafer, Daniels, 3M cash from boston

Nuggets get - Allen, Perkins, Robinson, J. O'Neal, Davis, Bradley, West, two 1st rounders from Boston, 3M cash from Boston

Celtics get - Anthony, Hilario, Hamilton, McGrady, T. White

The intent would be that some of the players get bought out and eventually come back to Boston.  C's would be very light at PG and have no deep bench (so injuries would be bad), but the starting lineup would be almost impossible to defend against and there are solid veterans on the bench.

C's rotation would be something like this post trade

Rondo, Pierce, Anthony, Garnett, Hilario - Rip, Shaq, McGrady, Erden with Harangody and White on the deep bench (until other roster moves are made and then they go to the DLeague)

Ultimately might diminish the C's chances this year, but a base of Rondo and Anthony going forward would greatly extend the long term prospects of the team.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

If Denver's excited enough about the savings, it's certainly not bad in terms of the amount of talent they're getting back either.....just doesn't look great to lose the better big..

Maybe D'antoni could be included in the deal....lol.

He could start:  Lawson, Felton, Afflalo, Chandler, Gallinari..........with Turiaf, Azubuike, KMart and Anderson off the bench......very D'antoni-like liineup
