It would be devastating to lose Perk in free agency. But he seems like someone who will give the Celtics the opportunity to (unofficially) match a contract offered by an outside team. I would not discount the prospect of a team under the cap offering Perkins over the MLE. But winning seems like an important goal for Perk. Miami cannot offer over the MLE so I think Perkins is pretty much a lock to stay. I hope I'm right.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Perk'll leave if he feels like the Celtics aren't doing right by him. If the Celtics low ball him, if they try to strong arm him, if they act only in the interest in minimizing their cap figure, counting that any offer Perk gets, they'll get the chance to match it, they'll be disappointed.

That's how Perk leaves. Perk stays if he feels like the C's are doing whats right. I doubt he's looking to get overpaid, but I do imagine he's looking to get paid by the C's comparable to any offer he could get.

Exactly Right.

Perk is an emotional person and i think his heart is in Boston - Danny needs to treat him like the key player for this organization that he is - respectfully and with a strong offer up front. don't play games with Perk, he will not appreciate that sort of attitude.

Say whatever you want but this is really an intelligent move by the Heat to not only target Perk now but go after him at all. He is a perfect compliment for what they need at the 5 spot and going after him is just a brilliant move on the Heat's part.

Letting him know now that they have interest NOW is even smarter. What is going to happen if Miami beats Boston or doesn't beat Boston but wins the championship. Letting Perk know now that he is their guy could help to swing his decision their way if it appears to Perk that if he wants ings then Miami is the place to be.

Perk is a tough call. He's a very private person who doesn't discuss this side of things very often. One thing he has said is that he loves Boston and that he loves playing with his good friend Rajon Rondo. Is that enough to keep him here if Boston tries to lowball him or not "respect" him from the very start? Who knows. But Miami is doing the right thing by giving him his near guaranteed option at rings and stardom by letting him aware of their interest in him right now.

Good points Nick, I agree.

It always amazes me when this kind of info comes out. If I'm a gm, there are maybe only two other people that know this info...the owner, and the assistant gm, and maybe possibly the team capologist. So when this info comes out you basically know who blabbed and you fire them.
There is a strong likelihood IMO that this is an agent leak designed to stimulate news. Not too far fetched to believe a conversation took place between the Heat and Perks agent to determine his future status. Not to mention being an attempt at disruption by certain parties.

I would also like to say that the future of Doc Rivers in the Boston Celtics organization will be a factor here for Perk. How many times have we heard that Doc being here is a huge reason to stay? The most recent was Pierce and I think Ray Allen.

If it is mainly about the money then he could go anywhere since he already has that ring. He is from Texas and still has family there, I think. People tend to gravitate back to where they come from in some cases and that may draw him back to the south-southwest, who really knows?

I think the Celtics will sign Perk, doing what it takes....

A team that needs Perk as badly as the Heat is Utah.  If they signed Perk they could then bring Jefferson off the bench for big minutes.....

Or:  if they wanted to shake things up, they could start Perk and Jefferson and trade Milsap to Memphis, since the Griz are going to lose their starting PF:

Millsap, Hayward and R. Bell for Mayo, Henry, Vasquez, Arthur and Thabeet
If people think Arthur and Thabeet are worth much then Utah adds in a first rounder.....

Trade ID #5836551 real gm

Perk, Jefferson, Kirilenko, Mayo, D. Williams

Griz replace Randolph and get more experienced....Utah improves defensively and should also score more...

very interesting theory and trade idea but I don't think Utah has the cap room to offer Perk enough money

thanks for info....good to know...wonder if they could get more space somehow (trade Kirilenko for expiring?)...then they'd need a Kirilenko replacement as well since Henry will likely not be ready and is more of a SG overall....well, maybe C.J. Miles could handle a starting role....or they could get a vet SF for cheap...

The Heat mainly Pat Riley is looking at the bigger picture.Whether they win now or later Perk is a D.Howard stopper to a degree. In order for them to get passed any team with Dwight on it they will need a player with Perk's caliber of defense and tenacity.

Its hard watching E.House knock down three after three for them so far,it would be worst seeing Perk wearing a Heat uniform.

Oh c'mon Perk. Don't.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Maybe.  But the idea is still financially impossible from the Heat's perspective.  Danny may not give him 10 million a year, but he'll give him more than the MLE, as will many other teams.

The Heat can "target" him all they want, but unless the NBA's new CBA includes a "Heat can exceed the salary cap by as much as they want" rule, there's no way that he's going to Miami.
