Celtics keeping eye on market

The Celtics had faint interest in sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic, who was bought out by the Raptors Thursday. Stojakovic (above) is headed to Dallas, according to a league source, because his family is close by in New Orleans, and the Mavericks desperately need small forward help with the injury to Caron Butler. The Celtics are keeping their eyes open for available players, and the pool will increase with the trade deadline upcoming. But team president Danny Ainge is pleased with his current roster and would like to see what happens when Delonte West and Jermaine O’Neal return from injury. Detroit’s Richard Hamilton would intrigue Ainge, but the Pistons would have to work out a buyout of his remaining $30 million, which includes an early termination option for 2012-13. It seems hopeless that Hamilton and the Pistons can continue beyond this season.

Hamilton said in recent weeks Shaquille O'Neal and Ray Allen of Boston, Rudy Gay of Memphis and the Suns' Vince Carter on Saturday night have given him words of support.

I wouldn't get my hopes up, just because Hamilton has two years left on his deal.  That means any buyout is going to count against Detroit's cap this year and next.

Is Detroit better off paying Hamilton $12.5 million this year and next, to have him on the roster and as an expiring contract next season, or instead to pay him, say, $9 million per year to be dead money?

They would be better off playing him and getting him shots to up his trade value.

I read that since the Pistons are up for sale their main objective is to reduce salary; and planning for the future is just secondary.  Not sure if trading Rip or buying him out saves them more money; but it seemed ideal for them to trade Rip for Troy Murphy as part of the Carmelo deal, then buying out Troy.  Rip has 2 years left on his deal so that makes a buyout very difficult.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again.  Joe Dumars should have been let go by now.

Passing on Melo, trading Billups for Iverson, using that cap space for Charlie V. & Ben Gordon, and giving Rip that extension warrants termination.

How much time does 2 finals appearances and a title buy a GM in this league?

drooling...

The defense would not be able to rest for 48 minutes and Ray can actually start playing the kind of minutes most humans play at his age (not that he cant handle it!)

Imagine them running around the floor at the same time!  Rip would be a little undersized to play the 3 but probably could do it against a smaller one.

But realistically I don't see any chance he's coming to the C's.  Lots of chatter on this just because Ray and Shaq contacted him.  Rudy and Vince contacted him as well but he's not likely going to the Grizz or Suns.

Definitely intriguing.

It would give us flexibility to use Nate in a trade, as with Delonte, Marquis, and Rip, we wouldn't need him.

It'd be also interesting to run a lineup of Ray, Rip, PP, KG, and Shaq.  How could anyone guard that lineup with all of those shooters, plus Shaq down low?

Still, I don't see it happening.

As Roy pointed out, the chances that Detroit buys him out to begin with are low.  Even if that small chance happens, I don't see him coming here.

He already has his ring, so he doesn't need to latch on like PJ Brown did two years ago.  He's probably better off going to Chicago, Dallas, or even Miami (and play as part of a big lineup with their Big Three).

Doesn't he have a guaranteed year next year, and an ETO the year after? I can't imagine him taking a penny less and threatening to not exercise the ETO too.

@CSL_Duke Nope. That's why a buyout of Rip's contract isn't likely to happen. And I know Rip. Leaving $$$ on the table? That.Ain't.Happenin'
