After 2009, I'm surprised people believe anything this coaching/training staff or GM says when it comes to injuries and KG. Until I see #5 fluidly running up and down the court, I'm going to assume it's something more than a "minor injury".

Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst, I guess.

I prefer to think that the coaching/training staff is trying to do the best they can with the information they have...and regardless of that information, I believe in miracles and am going to think only the best results until definitely proven wrong.  But that is just me...

I wish I could be so optimistic, it's not that I'm being pessimistic, just realistic. This "Belicheckian way" the Celtics have adopted leaves me to make my decision based on what I saw... And what I saw wasn't good.

I don't blame the OP one bit for feeling the way he feels base on this:

Quote
Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck said recently that the franchise was intentionally misleading ("Belicheckian") about Kevin Garnett's knee injury... http://www.fantasysp.com/nba_player_news/kevin_garnett/archive/06-2009/

Happy New Years to you too, Jsaad!

Why is it that optimists are branded as being not realistic?  My optimism comes through for me more often than not...last year I was one of the few who thought we would make it to the finals!

BTW, that's not to say I think KG is out for the seson or anything. I'm just saying that it's possible this injury is a lot worse than what they're letting on, and I won't exhale until I see him running up the court at full speed.

I understand that senitment exactly.  I want to see KG back before I believe anything.

Well, Jsaad, since the owners/trainers, etc. are not on the court, and Kevin himself doesn't think it is going to take two weeks,  can we go with "guarded optimism,"  ( :-\ ...you can see that I am trying to find common ground here, but I can't help my nature), or are you quite "positive" that they are lying about the injury again.

Having experienced and been around these injuries a bunch in the game, I am 100 percent certain they are not lying about this one. Garnett will be back. And soon.

I don't get the conspiracy theories here.  There's really zero evidence to suggest that this is anything even remotely close to season ending.  So what motivation would the C's have to say that a 4-6 week injury is only a 2 week injury?  They sell out games anyway, so that's not a problem.  And it's not like teams are preparing for them 3 weeks in advance and that we need to "trick" those teams.

It was one thing in 2009 when they were being ambiguous about a playoff return.  It was giving the players a ray of hope that if they could get through the first couple rounds, KG could be back.  It also was potentially confusing future opponents.  But none of that is true now.

Finally, while I did sleep, I did think that a KG injury was likely the worst possible Boston injury right now.  Even with someone like Brady, you know that the Patriots might darn well be better next year with 2 first, 2 second, and 2 third round picks.  However, with the lockout looming, this could be the last hurrah for the Big Three.  Thank goodness that he's not out.

I would have to say that while they may not be lying, they may not be telling the whole truth, either.

Team morale has to be considered - BECAUSE as Jon pointed out, "a KG injury (is) likely the worst possible Boston injury right now" - and so a bit of duplicity here COULD be in play.

The chances that this will go longer than 2 weeks before KG's return to the court are certainly substantial IMO...

@ Jon

The Belicheckian philosophy applies now just as it did 2009. (Big) Ticket sales are one thing, ratings and general interest would be in sharp decline if KG were out for the year, I assure you. Just look at the apathy toward the 2009 & 2010 Red Sox teams.

This isn’t a conspiracy theory; I’m just not exhaling until I see KG running and healthy on the court. Some agree and some don’t, but I’m happy others are convinced he’s fine because It makes me more optimistic.

BTW, there is a lockout looming in the NFL as well.

Totally disagree. There is no evidence whatsoever - from the replay of the incident to Garnett's mobility afterwards to the diagnosis itself - to suggest that this is anything but a calf muscle injury, which isn't the end of the world.

I don't understand this insistence on panic either, Jon. There's no factual evidence to support it.

Bo, I didn't say anything about panicking.  I specifically said that I think there's nearly zero chance that they are lying here.  All I said about panicking was that prior to the info the C's released yesterday, a Garnett injury was the worst possible injury any Boston team could have (hence the Brady reference).

Right now I just don't see it.  In 2009 be ambiguous had a point.  Today, it just doesn't.  Saying it's a 2 week injury or a 4 week injury really doesn't mean anything.  With Paul, Rondo, Ray, and Shaq people are going to watch this team regardless of the KG injury.  And as I said before, insisting that a 4 week injury is a 2 week injury doesn't give the team a competitive advantage.  This isn't the NFL where teams are preparing for an opponent weeks in advance.

In answer to the thread, I was able to sleep, but I was certainly concerned, as was my oldest son.

Glad to see things are looking better for his return in a couple of weeks!
