Been awhile guys but here are my thoughts on the draft/cap room that teams have:

The funny thing about last night is that all of these teams made moves to clear cap space for max contract free agents.  The only 'max' contract available is from the team these guys currently play for.  You can have all the cap room you want, but to get one of these top free agents to sign (LBJ and Bosh specifically) you need to convince them to take a 30 million dollar pay cut.

You think Lebron is going to agree to make less money than Wade?  Not a chance.  People seem to forget that he took a 3 year deal to maximize his salary at this point in time not to truly test free agency.  Lebron is going to get wined and dined and have a blast for a week or so.  He will then promptly sign for his true max contract.  There's no chance he takes a
giant pay cut when his original intention has always been to maximize his dollars.

it isn't a 30 million dollar pay cut, it is 30 less million on the total but is one less year.  It isn't like after the contract runs out they arne't going to still be getting big time dollars for that next year.

And if it was about the money, they wouldn't opt out and would just sign an extension (which is maximization of the money).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

Yeah, sorry to Cavs fans, but the only way LBJ is signing with your team is to do a S+T.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
That Bulls line up would be the deadliest. I doubt Deng will be there in that scenario. Someone who missed out on the good FAs would be happy to take on his contract. You add Ray Allen or Kyle Korver to that team to stretch the D and it could rank up there with the '96 Bulls. But then again, everything looks good on paper and on the court--remember that crazy Lakers team with Payton, Malone, Shaq....or that Celtics team with KG, Allen, Pierce, Rondo and Rasheed? Doesn't always guarantee you a trophy.

As the Bulls finalize their pitch, which sources said will be low-key and business-like, management knows its salary-cap space of roughly $30 million trails only the Knicks' $34 million. Failed attempts to trade Luol Deng or James Johnson prove management knows that falls just short of offering maximum contracts — which will start at roughly $16.5 million---to James and another player.

I was wondering about this... does anybody know exactly how much cap space Chicago has?  Is it definitely possible for Chicago to offer 2 max contracts?  I have them at officially having $22,861,000 guarenteed to 5 players (hoopshype).  So then, they could offer one max contract at 16.5M which would put them up to 39,361,000.  Then I believe they'd have cap holds on 8 players at about 500k each, so now were around $43,361,000 with one roster spot left.  That's not enough to offer a max, is it?

I wouldn't be sure. James has already sacrificed cash by opting out, instead of just extending.

Also the endorsements will more than cover that 30 million over 5 years.

I feel for you though. James created this circus, and it would be a hard blow if he left.

He will opt out because of the new CBA.  He knows this is his final chance at getting a huge deal.  The new CBA will change any future contract he signs after this year.  There is no way Lebron is missing out on this.

His endorsements are set.  Doesn't matter where he is playing.  His Nike deal could pay him more if he happens to start selling a lot of shoes in China.  The people in China don't care what team he plays for (unless he paired up with Yao).

It would definitely be a hard blow to the Cavs if Lebron left but Gilbert is a very good owner.  The guy won't let the Cavs just sink and wallow away in misery.  He will build a good team.

That would only maximize his money for this year.  The new CBA is going to really affect future salaries.  Anyone who doesn't believe that is kidding themselves.  The owners hold all the power in these deals not the players.
