honestly, I would be willing to do Posey instead of Wright because I like Posey a lot, but this makes more financial sense for the Cs.

I'd also be willing to do Sheed + #19, but I don't know if NO would even want that pick given that this move would be a salary dump for them.

anyway, NO gets salary relief and possibly a future or more affordable pick and the Cs get into the lottery.

plus, if we keep #19, we could package #11 + #19 to get even higher....or just make the picks.

How does NO save money on this? They get nothing out of it. Wright makes $2.85 million next year and can be a free agent after the season. The #11 pick's salary will start at around $1.8 million. While Wallace has apparently mentioned the possibility of retiring next year, neither he nor his agent has said anything publicly about it. He is on the books for $6.3 million this season and $6.8 next season. So if he doesn't retire and leave all his money on the table, NO adds a million in payroll this year (plus a $1 million luxury tax hit), and about $5 million next year for a guy they don't need, AND they give up a lottery pick to do it? How does this make ANY sense?

If New Orleans wanted to just save Julian Wright's salary, they could just trade him to a team with cap space for nothing, and if they wanted to save the money on the pick, they can just sell it for $3 million and a future or later 1st.

This doesn't even get into the fact that the trade doesn't work under league rules - if for some reason they wanted to take on a bunch of extra salary, New Orleans can't acquire $6.3 million in salary for $2.85 (picks don't count toward outgoing salary). Most they could take back is about $3.65 million.
Go Celtics.

well the idea is predicated on NO being over the lux tax (ie double salary)....so maybe Songaila would be better for them than Wright.

the savings would be in this season for a financially strapped franchise trying to keep their best player by not doing a fire sale.

I think Rasheed's contract COULD end up being valuable IF he decides that he's definitely going to retire and not demand a big buyout - all of which would go on the cap this season and can't be eliminated in a later trade. But he hasn't done that yet, and isn't going to do it today, so he is irrelevant for any salary dump trade purposes that also involve draft picks. Maybe something in a month or two, but right now, Rasheed Wallace is a soon-to-be-36-year-old, 18 inconsistent minutes a night, out of shape center with a bad back who is owed $13 million over the next two years. Until he confirms retirement-without-buyout plans, he has no value to any other team in the NBA.
Go Celtics.
