Rod Thorn will step down as president of the New Jersey Nets on July 15, according to league sources. Thorn, the Nets president since 2000, is under contract through June 30 but will remain for two weeks to help the club through the first two weeks of the free-agency period. Thorn is not being forced out by new owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, and there is no tension between the two, according to sources. "They've given Rod everything he could want," a league executive said. "This is entirely his decision." ESPN.com

Could it be the new owner is (Jerry) jonesing to get involved in team acquisitions?

Well if all goes according to his plan... the Nyets will win the title in 1 year minimum... 5 years maximum.  I guess Rod Thorn doesn't fit into that plan.

Maybe he seems the writing on the wall.  With lots of higher-profile franchises (that happen not to be located in New Jersey) having metric butt-tons of cap space, this offseason was shaping up to be a horrible disappointment.

Rod Thorn has done an absolutely tremendous job over the past 12 months. It is a big blow for the Nets to lose him.

Although, Pritchard is available. He would likely be their first choice replacement. Landing Pritchard could make this a non-issue.

To think too, a year ago it seemed as though the Nets had the best team heading into this off-season.

Yeah, that's true. Of course Charles Barkley is probably interested too.  ;D

I've been dreaming about this starting lineup for on and off throughout the day:

Devin Harris + Joe Johnson + Damion James + Derrick Favors + Brook Lopez

Three go-to scorers -- A low post seven footer in Brook Lopez. A multi-dimensional wing player in Joe Johnson. A scoring point guard in Devin Harris. Two quality role players in the forward slots + that's totally ignoring Favors offensive potential.

Defense -- Above average defenders at every position

Rebounding -- solid rebounders in the backcourt and in the middle and two very promising rebounders at the forward slots.

That starting five could create the base to a Title Contender. Also, a high quality role player in Courtney Lee + about $10 million leftover in cap space to sign another player (David Lee? that would be a great three player big man rotation).

It's amazing to of the possibilities New Jersey has and the progress they have made over the past 12 months. Rod Thorn deserves a lot of credit.

maybe he just got confirmation that the nets are out of the lebron and wade sweepstakes, so it's time to move on. DiAntoni could be next if that's the case.

D'Antoni is the coach, though. Perhaps you meant Walsh?

  • Rondo = Good
Pritchard should definitely go to the Nets.  If Prokhorov is smart he'll hire him right away.
