So today Tiger played the course at Augusta better than he ever has in the first round.  Pretty amazing -- he basically has no rust.  It is also amazing that score wasn't the best.  Shaping up to be a very good golf weekend (for those that care).
Celtics fan for life.

Another very impressive day by Tiger, with two more days to play.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect his ability to focus.  It is unnerving.

What's really scary is to beat Tiger at Augusta you need to have some good separation between you and him going into Saturday because it always seems he's dropping 65 or 66 or 67 on Saturday while everyone is starting to tighten up. That usually leaves Tiger in good position to be in the hunt on Sunday and win it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the conditions are good to see Tiger throw down a 66 tomorrow while all the other contenders are putting up numbers around par.

Sorry for being a downright noob here, but erm... Par is using a number of swings equal to what's "set" previously on that hole, right?

Jeez, I really don't know a thing about golf.

Correct and par for the course is the total of the pars for each hole added together.

Correct and par for the course is the total of the pars for each hole added together.
So par for this course, which BTW is one of the most naturally beautiful in the whole world, is 72 shots.

Right now they have played for two days so par is 144. Tiger is at -6 or 6 under par or he is at 138 through 72 holes.

So I am expecting him to shot between -4 and -6 tomorrow to go to somewhere between -10 to -12 for the tournament to that point.

Got it.

Also per hole there are words to describe how well you play the hole. So let's say Tiger is playing a hole rated as a par 5.

If he gets it in the hole in 3 shots, or two under par for the hole he made an eagle.
If he gets it in the hole in 4 shots, or one under par for the hole he made a birdie.
If he gets it in the hole in 5 shots, or at par for the hole he made par.
If he gets it in the hole in 6 shots, or one over par for the hole he made a bogey.
Every shot number more than bogey is a type of bogey
Double bogey is two above par, triple bogey is three above par, etc.

You forgot the extremely common 2 on a par 5 (albatross)!  ;)

Thanks guys.

One more question: how do they set the par?

Thanks guys.

One more question: how do they set the par?

Par is determined by the length and difficulty of the hole... such as terrain, hazards, etc. The biggest part in the decision is length though. A par 3 means it is normal to finish the hole within 3 strokes... A par 4 means it would normally take 4 strokes... And a par 5 means it would normally take 5.

It's a predetermined number... If you went to a golf course right now to play... you would get a scorecard that would say the distance and par for each hole... and you try to score better than par... meaning take less strokes than is considered average. This is why negative scores are good in golf and positive scores are bad.

I can add a bit here I guess. The green is meant to be a 2-putt, e.g. on a Par 5 you are expected to reach the green within 3 shots, and putt the hole in 2 shots.

I continue to be incredibly impressed by Tiger, but what Phil Mickelson did in a 30 minute period is amazing (those back to back eagles, a birdie).
