Williams can block shots, but that's different than defending.  At BC, his team was actually worse defensively with him on the floor, and I'm sure his defense didn't get better at the pro level.  Williams is too concerned about highlights, and not concerned enough with fundamentals.

Why does it always seem the CelticsBlog community guys prefer so many guys cause of their body stats than what they can actually do on a basketball court?

A player being waived this late in the season (after march 1st) cannot qualify for a post season roster.

If he were healthy, and released sooner, i'd be all about picking Bell up.

I thought it was after the cutoff date--wasn't sure of the specific date.  I believe this applies to Finley as well---pretty sure we signed him after the beginning of the month.

A player has to be waived prior to March 1st cutoff, but they can be signed later.

Finley was waived on Mar 1st, and signed 3 days later. Ilgauskas was released before March 1st, and will be back in Cleveland after he sits out his required month (before returning to a former team).

Raja Bell was just waived today, right?

Since Finley was released 3/1, that would make him ineligible for the postseason----Correct?

Sorry, 3/1 was the cut off day - but specifically either 12 noon, or 6pm. I can't remember the exact time.

 

Don't know either, but I can't imagine the Celtics would have signed him and so much playing time if they weren't getting him prepared for post season.

Yeah, let's use some common sense here.  Of course Finley is eligible for the playoffs (and Bell would not be).  Otherwise, we would not have signed him in the first place.

We already have a log jam at his position. There would be no room for him anywhere. Plus he wouldnt be eligible for the playoffs. I would rather sign Shawne Williams for the rest of the regular season, give him a few minutes here and there to see if he could play a role for us next season off the bench.

Did you see him play alot at BC?  Was not aware that was his game there.

We have one roster spot open.

Bell could give us what House gave us, a 3 point specialist.

Bell's current age, he could also give us the same or maybe a tad better defense than House gave.

If Raja were healthy and available for the playoff roster, he'd eeeeeeasily be our best sub. That's not even debatable as far as I am concerned. Would be our best defender and he is a very solid 3-point shooter (41% for his career).

But he's not recovered yet from his surgery and was waived post-deadline, so whatever. Just had to chime in when people somehow think that there's a question that he would be our 6th man.

right now, my wager is that he is most concerned with being out of the league....so I would take a flier on him. I don't see how we have anything to lose and like others have said, he is a a shotblocker....

I agree with others here that we'd be better off waiting to see if a decent bigman becomes available though I doubt that will happen. 

Too bad this wasn't an option sooner--->would have been good to get him in house before the end of the season.  May have been able to resign him without the MLE (not sure if that was an option for players picked off waivers).  Definitely someone to look at for next year for the bench--another option to Daniels, TA and Finley.

Well that all depends on how we do in the post-season. If we can beat the Magic and Cavs then we might feel more comfortable investing in a defensive oriented sg like Raja. If we lose in the first or second round then it's all up in the air. If we make it to the finals and and get burned by Western conference perimeter shooters (a few names come to mind) then we might have to adopt a more defensive strategy next season. Do you think Nate Rob can guard elite point-gaurds (either starters or back-up pgs)? I know the man has got hops but he's still giving up a little height in almost every scenario I can think up off the top of my head.

That's the problem. On an aging team it would be nice for us to try and pick up a younger player whenever necessary. I mean, Rondo and Nate are young, same with Baby Perkins and Marquis but who out of them is considered franchise level talent? Rasheed and Finley are both well past their prime, could you imagine trading those two and another big for an elite center? Yao Ming should be fresh off of injury by then, or we could try and discourage any chance that Dwight Howard tries to cop another page from Shaq's legacy and sign with the Lakers...
