just a quick question that has been bugging me regarding this off season. Can we use the bird rights on TA making him stay without using the vet min or part of mle. that would be premium so then we could use the MLE and LLE on guys like Ridnour, Rasual Butler, or just spend the whole MLE on Travis Outlaw, Tyrus Thomas or Al Harrington. Vet min guys could be Amir Johnson, Kyle Korver, Roger Mason. Basically i would just like to know if we can keep TA without having to use the MLE, or vet min...thanks.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
Why would we want to?  There can easily be found an upgrade over Tony.  I'd like to think that Danny has seen enough - he's not worth a long-term investment.

For the right price, having a guy that provides defensive hustle and knows the plays is helpful.  TA's big problem has always been playing within his actual ability as a role player, rather than the star he teased that he could have been.  If he's happy with being a backup with no assurance of PT, he's worth keeping around in the $2 million range, but no more than that.

Unfortunately, our options are limited in terms of filling out the roster.  We have the MLE ($5.5 - $6.0 million), minimum contracts, and Bird rights / non-Bird rights.  That means we may not be able to get a player of Tony's caliber otherwise, as mediocre as that may be.  He beats the Walkers and Giddens of the world.

Of course, a sign-and-trade would serve us well.

Tony's our 4th wing. That's not our biggest concern. First we need a primary backup wing and then we need to either sign Nate or get another backup pg. Then look at TA's spot. We might not have more than the min left to spend, and it's unlikely you'd get much better if anywhere near as good with the vet min.

yeah thats what i mean i rather bring TA back. If you don't then you have one more position you need to address with the limited amount of money the Celtics have. so bring TA back because he is a good option at low money, then split the MLE to Rasual Butler and Luke Ridnour. its not sexy but effective.

also i don't think the celtics have much of an option other to re-sign Ray Allen for say 2 years 18 million unless they figure out a sign and trade, unless you downgrade the position.

I want TA if we have another wing that will handle the ball (like Marquis does). I think TA is most effective when he is the 3rd or 4th option on offense.

Bring back Ryan Gomes  ;)

Thats a popular one around here.  How would he mesh on this team? I think it'd be great
