Having both these guys on the same team is exciting. Both are super competitive, super quick and will push each other and their teammates. Nate will physically challenge RR in practices and his energy in games will challenge RR to match it. RR has, as so many other of our beloved Cs, coasted many, many times this season. As another poster in another Nate thread today so astutely pointed out: Doc can tell RR to play your butt off non-stop for 36 minutes, because your replacement (Nate) will push the pace when your not in there. RR will also not want to get outplayed by Nate and vice versa.
What's also exciting is something Doc said last night about the two playing together more than some people would think, particularly against certain lineups but sometimes irrespective of the opposition's lineup. This is exciting because both these guys have an attack mentality, but bring different things to the table. While both are ultra-quick, RR is more probing, keeping the dribble alive, weaving under the basket a la Steve Nash and looking to dish more than finish but has gotten much better at finishing. Nate is more smash mouth in your face coming right at you looking to score. (His toughness and aggression go back to his Husky football days when as a freshman he played every game for his Pac-10 team as a hard-nosed DB.) I look forward to seeing them on the court at the same time, but I understand people's concerns about their lack of size on D out there together. I guess whom they're matched against will dictate if they are paired together, but RR's long arms can help him guard some 2s. What encourages me is that Doc seems to be saying we'll put them out there together, regardless and let the other team worry about having to matchup with their speed and aggression offensively.
Once these two have played together and begin to trust each other and see what each brings to the table, I think they'll play nice. The potential flip-side is that their egos and competitiveness cause dissension and contention. Nate's playing for a ring and a contract and RR is playing to win. I think they're both savvy enough to realize that they'll both have a great chance to get what they want if they work togeteher.
Thoughts.
