Ok, once again, I offer an impossible scenario...

The scenario is that one of us, at Celticsblog, is a true multi-billionaire who can make in the hundreds of millions (or more), on something like shorting the British pound, one enchanted evening.

Thus, you commandeer a series of Quantum Funds which makes you rich beyond your widest imagination.

Now, in place of let's say buying the Celtics off Wyc and Co, you decide on something more elaborate. As an independent rich dude, you offer every veteran on the C's, a $10-$18 million per year annuity which pays for every year of service to the C's. Perhaps the only thing that the players need to do for you is to put that NBA salary into an escrow account, as a deposit. Now, Ainge can in effect, build a team of experienced top shelf vets, playing at Vet's minimum (including the big three, during their re-negotiations), while keeping only Perks/Rondo in the max contract zone. It will, in effect, produce a team of nothing less than stars, both in the starting lineup and off the bench.

Can Dave Stern stop the "Celticsblog" Soros from doing this? Since as Soros, there's nothing you'll need from the league, in terms of advertisements/endorsements, etc? In effect, by definition, you are an infinitely powerful rich man.

Any compensation you give to a player -- whether it be salary or some other perk -- counts against the salary cap.  Thus, if the players are essentially being given deferred compensation, the team would have to be able to fit that under the cap (assuming it's being offered to an outside free agent).

Roy's right - when Rodman was on the Mavericks the league forced Cuban to stop putting Rodman up in his guest house because it was considered additional compensation.  The only way to do something like that would be under the table, and then God help you when the league office inevitably found out.

The thing to do would be to sign every Celtic to a 10 million dollar a year endorsement contract for whatever company you own and make it widely known that anyone who comes to the Celtics gets the same deal so they will sign here for less money

I guess the problem here is that Cuban is the Mav's owner, so he's bound by all kinds of rules in place by Stern and Co.

In the C'blog Soros case, he'll be a *friend* of Danny and Wyc, so he's not a part of the Celtics management or ownership, in any way. Thus, the annuity will be a type of endorsement, given to anyone who signs up for Vet's minimum for the C's.

I guess that'll work then, a true billionaire can make the Celts a perennial contender.

The Steinbrenner family owns the Yankees, hence its their business.

Our C'blog Soros isn't a part of the Wyc & Co partnership; he's an independent rich dude, granting annuities to free agents who'll sign for the C's at veteran's minimum. That's a true fan of the Celts, a man who'll part with his "private jetting" funds to help Boston win endless championships. Granted, he's got enough cash so it's won't effect his hobbies too much, but yeah, he'll cut down on a few additional mansions in Malibu, Britain, and Spain. Perhaps, par down on a few hypersonic jets and personal rockets.

Right you have to be paying them for a service other than playing basketball.

I think you missed the previous poster's point. His point was about buying championships, like northeast teams do in baseball, not about ownership.

As long as it's the Celtics, I'm all for buying championships.

I'll also help the Houston Rockets, just as well, so that the Laker's never win the west again.
