Folks, this is not good news. ESPN true hoops reports:
One league source told me that LeBron, Wade and Bosh have all talked about playing together. Now, given the economy, the reality has changed. I think Miami is the only team with the financial flexibility to make such a scenario happen. However, had the economy not tanked last year, a number of teams would've had the cap room to bring at least two of them together.
In the summer of 2008 we were projecting a $64 million cap for the summer of 2010. Now the league has warned teams that the cap may fall all the way down to between $50 and $53 million next summer. That's an $11 to 14 million difference.
Had the cap stayed on its usual course, the Heat would've been $31 to $35 million under with Dwyane Wade's cap hold on the books (meaning they could've signed two max players in addition to Wade). The Knicks and Nets would've been $35 to $40 million under -- enough cap room to sign two superstars. And even the Cavs would've had the room to lure another big-time free agent to play alongside LeBron.
But with the cap projected to go down this year, it appears that Miami is the only team capable of pulling something like this off -- and even that is a long shot now. According to
http://hoopshype.com/salaries/boston.htm The Celtics have committed 62 million to Seven players. So the Celtics will be at the luxery tax threshold before resigning their FA's and rookies. If Paul Pierce foolishly opts out, then it is 41 million to Six Players which gives Ainge and Wyc about 9 million dollars to chase FA's. I don't know what help we will get in the draft. Also are in Perkins last year of his contract. We also have Glen Deadweight Davis plus Sheed might well be another aging burden. That is why CHAMPIONSHIP 18 is imperative to the Celtics this year. We lost Leon Powe and now Glen Davis both of which were helpful rebounders. We are now relying on Sheldon Williams, Perk, and volunteer SF, SG, and PG to rebound. From what I have seen so far is that big physical teams get an advantage on us when our defense and finesse offense fails like last night.
THe salary spread sheet indicates that Rondo has the keys to this team for the next five years. KG has two more years along wih Sheed. Scalabrine, Sheldon Williams, TA, Marquise Daniels, Eddie House, and Ray Allen are all in the last years of their deals. The Celtics will have to do some heavyweight personnel decisions and philisophical decisions to make at the end of the season.
